CCHS Newsletter 23 - 10th May 2021
Weekly Message from Mr Harding, Executive Head Teacher
A short week but a busy week!  I'm sure that many of you will have already seen the letter that I sent to parents and guardians concerning the establishment of a student and staff Diversity and Inclusion working group.  We will not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia, disability disrmination or any behaviour which contravenes our school value of Altruism.  We are keen to ensure that we do not become complacent and that we deal with issues in an informed and progressive way.  I'm grateful to the many staff and students that have volunteered to be part of this group.

Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Award
Last week a group of Year 9 students were taken through their paces on their DofE Day Walk & Bronze Practice Expedition on Cannock Chase, learning about all the skills they are going to need to pass their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Some of the skills they learned included how to read a map, how to navigate through tricky terrain, what equipment they will need, what to eat, how to cook and how to put up a tent.
Students showed some great teamwork skills and are now all set for the qualifing expedition over the Long Mynd on the 26th and 27th May 2021.
Good luck to everyone involved!

Book Recommendations

The Last Summer of Us
by Maggie Harcourt

After her mother’s funeral, Limpet is only too glad to get away for a few days and join her best friends Steffan and Jared on a summer road trip. What follows is a journey of self-discovery where they share fun and laughter but also worries and regrets as they all know that this will be their last summer together, like this, for ever.

This is a story of friendship, grief, love and loss, cleverly disguised as a road trip.  It is beautifully written, perfectly evoking the dying summer and the feelings of sadness as life moves on and brings change.  The dialogue is wonderful with plenty of humorous banter between the friends in a truly moving story which is difficult to put down, or indeed forget.

Available for free on Sora.  Sora link: https://soraapp.com/home - this is for all Year 9 or Year 10 pupils. If any pupils can't remember their logins (they are written in their yellow books) then they can email at efo@ch-pb.com

Suitable for:  All year groups at CCHS
ISBN: 1474955444

Students are still being encouraged to sign up for a free online tool recently produced by a charity called Read for Good. Students are sent unique web links where they register their reading and the number of minutes they have spent reading, which then contributes to a 'school total'. It's really easy to use - for pupils to be able to log a variety of different texts on this, e.g. article, comic, book.  The school's page can be found here https://trackmyread.org/public/I9Cku4VoTlyyCjaPdWq4

Thank you to all of the students who have already registered their reading.  Miss Ford is very pleased with your progress!

General Reminders
MOBILE PHONE POLICY

A reminder that students are not allowed to use mobile phones on site during the school day, with the exception of Sixth Form students who can use them when working in the Sixth Form centre only.

Years 9, 10, 11
Rules
1. Students are not permitted to carry or use mobile phones within the
school at any point during the school day, including break and lunch.
2. Phones must either be left at Student Services at the start of the school
day or switched off in their school bag.

Rationale
The school places great importance on the wellbeing and safety of all
individuals and mobile phone use during the school day has been proven
to lead to incidents of;
➢ bullying
➢ intimidation
➢ deteriorating mental health and wellbeing.
Learning is impacted upon in a negative way by issues around mobile phone use for social purposes.

The full mobile phone policy, along with all school policies, can be found on the school website on https://www.cc-hs.com/policies/

Thank you for your continued support.
Reminder that students and staff are now being asked to conduct 2 lateral flow tests a week at home.  We suggest that tests are done a few days apart for example on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Students received more self-test kits before Easter to see them through the next few weeks.
Results should be registered at www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result and through our own website covid 19 Record Results
Due to a computer error, some students may have been awarded an incorrect number of Achievement points for some sessions.  Please note that this is now being corrected.
Have you left a message on our school answer phone for a member of staff recently?
If you ever need to leave a message on our answer phone, please remember to say which member of staff you wish the message to go to so that we can ensure the messages are passed onto the person who can best  address your query.
ONLINE WORKSHOPS - BEHAVOUR & WELLBEING
Community Events
As part of @EarthDay awareness which promotes the importance of being green and taking care of our planet, our @codsallsixth have been litter picking and promoting our Air Aware campaign to 'switch off when you drop off' to parents this morning
#EarthDay #AirAware
Thank you to the Sixth Form students who have been handing out information leaflets and car stickers to parents who dropped off their children at school and thank you for your support.

DID YOU KNOW?:
  • Idling is the main source of air pollution around our school.
  • For every minute a car idles enough harmful exhaust to fill 150 balloons is sent into the air we breath.
  • If everyone switched off their engine when dropping off or picking up, air pollution around our school would fall by a huge 30%.

MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE:
Poor air affects everyone but expecially children.  Poor air quality can seriously aggravate conditions like asthma.  It's responsible for 500 deaths a year across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

But the good news is that you can do something about it.  Walking or cycling to school even once a week will make a big difference.

If you must drive, why not park away from the school then walk in?  Remember that leaving your engine running while stationary is illegal.

Take our anti-idling pledge and find out more at:
Iwillnotidle.doingourbit.info
If you would like us to share a community event with others in a future newsletter, please contact the school with details email: office@cc-hs.com
Have your circumstances changed recently?
Parents claiming some benefits can claim free school meals for any of their children who are registered at a Staffordshire school and who would normally be at school at lunch time. School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime and you can save yourself time and money.

Even if you don't want your children to have the meals, claiming them helps their school. The more eligible parents who claim meals, the more funding the school receives.
