Currently the ESA BIC CH team is busy talking to all partners in the extensive partner network about renewing the existing partnership, for the next 5 years of ESA BIC Switzerland.
Another good occasion to say "thank you" again to all our great partners, without which the program would definitely not be what it is. We and especially our start-ups much appreciate all your continuous support and effort!
This also leads us to announce a new, very valuable partnership we just started with Farner Consulting AG, the experts when it comes to communication. We are delighted to have you on board Team Farner!

On April 15th the second Community Building Event of the year took place on the topic: HR, hiring and culture. We got the opportunity to listen to our alumni Flybotix and Embotech and their experience from a start-up perspective and we had Claudia Bolliger-Winkler from LionStep telling us about recruiting.

The new cohort #10 that was selected during the jury session on March 16th is just about to officially enter the program: on May 10th the new crowd will have their Kick-off Meeting. Keep following our social media channels in order to learn more about the newcomers.

Last but not least: if you feel you want to change your job considerably you can still apply as the next ESA astronaut :-) Applications are open until May 28th.

ESA BIC CH start-up: Lumiphase

Enabling every chip to interact through light.

Lumiphase aims to facilitate the convergence of computing, networking and sensing by allowing seamless integration of electronic and photonic functions.
By producing chips that use light in the most efficient way the world's increasing need for handling larger data volume is met. The technology is based on a unique material: Barium Titanate (BTO) which has the largest electro-optical effect on silicone and unprecendented piezo- and ferro-electric properties on silicon.

Applications in need of ultra-compact, low-power and cost-efficient light control engines are being addressed:
  • Datacom
    • high-speed transceivers
    • co-packaged optics
    • optical switches
  • Telecom
    • coherent transponders
    • ROADMs
    • RF over fiber
    • inter-satellite communication
  • Computing
    • new architectures and topologies
    • new computing paradigms
  • Sensing
    • autonomous driving
    • 3D scene imaging
    • beam steering
    • molecular fingerprint
The picture above shows the silicon photonics platform, which offers scalability, cost-efficiency and reliability and in result an unmatched capability to manipulate light.

Start-up highlights:

  • EH Group secured a major contract for their 250kW system for stationary application.
  • MicroR kicked-off a 5.8 Mio Euro project for next generation photonic computing.
  • Miraex closed the first part (2M) of a 3.5M CHF financing round and were acknowledged by Bertrand Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation.
  • NematX submitted the first 3D printed pre-flight test samples for ESA’s Euro Material Ageing campaign on board the ISS.
  • Polariton launched a new successful LinkedIn series "the science behind polariton".
  • Rigi Technologies completed a 1-week drone delivery demo in Senegal with NGO partner PATH.
  • XRNanotech participated in the International Conference on Space Optics and are part of Luminate, the largest accelerator for optics, photonics and imaging.
  • Alumnus ClearSpace and incubatee Miraex have been voted as two of the top 8 start-ups in Switzerland by Bilan.
