Sacramento Valley Director Search

CHAPTER CHATS
“April showers bring May flowers”, or at least they used to? In PECland we farmers and gardeners were hoping for a good week of rain that ended up blowing over and leaving us, high and dry for the rest of April. But we do seem to have beautiful flowers? The grapevines have shiny green leaves, juicy cherries are ripening and the roses are blooming. More to come as the season progresses, water conservation is in the air.

PEC continues to meet and enjoy eachothers company every Wednesday night, 6:30 for conversation and 7 for warm-ups over ZOOM. We have coming up in June another one of our popular “Sip & Sing With Us” events. Grab a glass of your favorite libation and join us.

What a blast we had at our April Zoom Ed Class with the incomparable Karen Breidert. She had so much energy it was contagious. She is an expert at the Barbershop style and has so many antidotes for any situation and she kept them coming. This was our first time coaching with Karen and we all loved her and learned so much. Thank you Patty for bringing her to us.

Another Contest year will have been over by the time we read these messages. The Pacific Empire Chorus is honored to be your current Regional Champions and we don’t take that lightly. We are lucky enough to have a wonderful hall where all of our things are stored and it is time to get it opened up, cleaned and ready. Ringing chords soon to be in the air again in our little Koinonia Hall. We are 99% fully vaccinated and we are planning to start meeting in small groups in June. We will begin to prepare to represent at International Phoenix 2022.
#Region12Rocks!

Last year, just as we all were coping with the idea of not singing together “for a couple weeks,” our founding director, Anita Main, announced she would be retiring in January, 2021.

Let me tell you, mounting a director search during a pandemic is...challenging.  In the meantime, please join us in welcoming Susan Ramage as our interim director.

Susan comes to us as a 25 year member of Sweet Adelines.  She sings baritone as a dual member with Sounds of the Valley and California HEAT Choruses.  Prior to moving to Northern California, Susan sang with Mission Viejo, Scottsdale and Harborlites Choruses, twice competing with Harborlites Chorus on the international stage - in Nashville as a wild card (4th place) and Indianapolis in 2004, winning a first-place medal.

Susan has completed all levels of Region 12’s Learn Arm Waving (L.A.W.) program and is currently taking the Director Certification Program.  Once we can meet as a chorus “in person” we will resume our Director Search.  But until then, something tells me, we’re in good hands.

Diablo Vista Chorus is fundraising as we speak! All this week, we're running an online silent auction, which culminates in a live virtual gala this Saturday, May 8, at 3:45 pm. Auction prizes include jewelry and handbags, signed art and collectibles (autographed Warriors photos, anyone?), wine sets, and several luxurious vacations, including trips to Lake Tahoe, Oregon wine country, Croatia, and to Fairmont Hotel locations around the globe. Register at bit.ly/DVC-gala to place your bids now--you might find the perfect last-minute Mother's Day gift!

While planning the auction, DVC dipped its toes into the waters of "pod" singing. Pods are small groups of members who meet in person to attend Zoom rehearsals together. Participation is optional, with pods following local, state, and CDC guidelines for safety. Caitlin can now do live pod coaching during rehearsals, and what a joy it is to hear multiple voices--and multiple voice parts--singing together again. We hope it won't be too much longer before outdoor, in-person rehearsals become a reality--stay tuned!

The most exciting thing has happened! MVC is singing in person again every other Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12 noon in a large parking lot outside OBI Studios, where we donned our masks and/or face shields to be safe. The first outside rehearsal was on April 17,  and we welcomed friends we haven’t seen in over a year. It was so nice to see everyone! We still have our regular Tuesday night Zoom sessions at 7:30 p.m.

If you are tuning in to the Regional celebration, MVC submitted our virtual “Pure Imagination” video for the chorus component. There’s a lot of “imagination” in this video, which makes it fun to watch…and listen to!

This month we worked with Lynne Smith, visual performance/showmanship coach, who coached us on personal performance awareness, a positive assessment approach using a checklist of basic performance skills. First we worked with volunteers from the Music Team, and then we worked with each other in smaller groups in the breakout rooms. We had fun learning an affirmative way to assess and not judge ourselves and our volunteers.

For our Author Chat, we had Gary Singh, who writes the Silicon Alleys column for the Metro Silicon Valley. It was interesting to contrast writing a newspaper column with writing a book. Our next Chat will be Monday, May 17with Nancy Menees Hardesty. She wrote a book called The Bonnet Book: Diary of an Orphan Train Hatmaker, which is based on her grandmother’s diary.
SACRAMENTO VALLEY CHORUS is still ‘zooming’ through this pandemic. But happily, our dedicated director, Dede Nibler, was able to take a much-deserved vacation to Cancun for a week. The rest of the chorus took a staycation vacation and had some Zoom social time, sharing travel information about our most memorable trips. We all had a moment to reset, reflect and re-energize our minds and bodies.

Also this month, Dede invited groups of eight ladies on varying days into her home for one hour sessions. Singing has never felt better! Standing next to someone singing a different part felt so wonderful. It was great to hear harmony again. Each of us was required to have been vaccinated prior to attending these singing sessions. Singing together like this gave us the feeling of finally being "HOME."

April didn't bring us any rain showers, but we did manage to have an Easter hat contest and parade.  Everyone was encouraged to wear their creative fashion millinery. Pattie Easley won first place with a fashionable "Hello Dolly" vibe. Second place winner was Betty Steinbach, and Stefanie Carson took third place!

We are very sad to let everyone know that our dear friend and long time member of River Lights Chorus, Marge Boyd, has passed away. We will miss her lovely face, beautiful Bass voice and especially her friendship.

High Desert Harmony had a successful virtual guest info night at the beginning of April - so successful that we are thrilled to announce that from the date of the guest event to today, we have welcomed FIVE new members to our chorus! Please join us in welcoming the following ladies:
  • Sue-Ting Chene (Tenor)
  • Chris Keenan (Bass)
  • Sheila Monson (Lead)
  • Pauline Rusert-Schwartz (Lead)
  • Alicia Cobb (Lead)

Additionally, amidst the chaos of the pandemic, we felt that it was our time to give back to the community as a group. High Desert Harmony recently "adopted" Mira Loma Park, a local park in Reno, where we will help beautify the area and keep it clean for all to enjoy. We're looking forward to our first group clean-up later in May!

Be on the lookout for our Spring "Concert" recording! We'll be putting together a unique video performance, thanks to the help of our videography team. Follow us on our Facebook (@HighDesertHarmonyChorus) and YouTube (@HighDesertHarmony) to tune into at the end of this month.

Spring has definitely sprung - it's hard to believe we are already in May. April was a busy month for us. As the pandemic starts to ease, we have begun planning for small in-person optional workshops to be held outdoors to start getting us used to singing together in person. We hope these will begin in late May or early June.

We have continued to expand member use of the Jamulus software, which allows us to sing together and actually hear one another! We had several section rehearsals throughout the month, and at the end of the month, we had coaching from Jana Gutenson and Lori Lyford.  They provided coaching to the Jamulus singers, and the rest of the chorus was able to listen and participate through Zoom.

We also introduced a new song, "When I Sing," by Bill Henderson and arranged by Tom Gentry. This peppy tune really spells out what singing means to most of us - we just feel a lot better when we sing!

Outside of rehearsal, we offered a boot camp session for our newest members and interested guests. Chorus leaders worked together to provide instruction about barbershop singing. Since our in-person Regional Competition and Convention was cancelled in favor of a virtual Heroes in Harmony event, we submitted a presentation that included many of the virtual performances BASC and its quartets have created this past year. Coffee chats continue, and one of our members offered a Zoom dance and movement class.

In member news, we sadly lost one of our long-time members, Joyce Falger, at the beginning of the month, and we lost former member Esther Makower in the middle of the month. We will miss their joy and their lovely voices.

As we move forward into the summer months, we hope that circumstances continue to improve and that we are able to return to some semblance of normal soon.

We've even included a virtual "faculty lounge" where you can hang out and talk to some of barbershop's top coaches and experts.
