In his apostolic exhortation, Patris Corde, With a Father’s Heart, announcing this Year of St. Joseph, Pope Francis explains that Joseph is a model for our contemporary world of true fatherhood, one that doesn’t abuse authority and power but places it at the service of others. Francis states, “Every true vocation is born of the gift of oneself, which is the fruit of mature sacrifice. The priesthood and consecrated life likewise require this kind of maturity.”
Interestingly, the Holy Cross Brothers were originally founded as the Brothers of St. Joseph by Fr. Jacques Dujarie in 1820, to meet the educational needs of post-revolutionary France. Because of Fr. Dujarie’s failing health, the local bishop asked Fr. Basil Moreau, who had recently founded the Auxiliary Priests from Holy Cross (Sainte Croix), to take on leadership of the brothers. In 1837 the Brothers of Saint Joseph and the Auxiliary Priests from Holy Cross were united into the Congregation of (from) Holy Cross. Father Moreau then founded the women’s branch of Holy Cross as the Marianites of Holy Cross... The United States branch took the name the Sisters of the Holy Cross…
