Primary News 2020/21
Issue 35

Dear Parents and Families,

This week, students in grades 2-5 are in the midst of MAP testing as a part of our annual cycle of collecting data in a variety of different ways. The MAP test measures achievement and growth for math, reading, language usage, and reading fluency. It provides teachers with evidence to help target instruction for each student or groups of students based on their individual goals. In the weeks to follow, teachers will be reviewing grade level benchmarks and evaluating student progress over the course of the second semester (and the year) in preparation for report writing, student-led conferences, and goal setting for moving into next year.

Grade 2 Provocation
Last Friday, the Grade 2 classes came together for a musical rock concert hosted by the band, Comfortable Shoes, made up of SIS teachers to explore their next unit, Where We Are in Place and Time. It was a truly fun and exciting provocation that inspired students to begin thinking about their new central idea, “Individuals can choose to make a difference”.

G3 Inquiry into Passions
Grade 3 is launching their final unit of the year with a focus on the central idea of, "An inquiry cycle helps us explore our interests to share with others." As students begin to explore their personal interests, they have had the opportunity to listen to teachers and staff members talk about their own pursuits of their passions. At home, tell your own stories to your children. What did you want to pursue? How did you go about it?

“Poem in your Pocket” Day
Last Thursday, Students from grades 1-5 celebrated “Poem in Your Pocket” day by choosing (or writing) a poem to have in their pocket that day. This playful experience is a way to celebrate reading and writing across the school and to inspire students to appreciate this genre of writing in a way that promotes communication and social skills across the school!

There will be two sales points; the entrance to Parkside and the other close to the SPAH at Mountainside. Each flower will cost 10rmb and the card will cost 5rmb and we will limit sales to two flowers and two cards per student. So each student would spend a total of 30rmb.
