Sustainable Neighbourhood News - An update for Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers
Hi <<First Name>>
Thank you for expressing your interest in the Sustainable Neighbourhoods program at Council's May Movie last night. As requested, we have subscribed you to our email list.

About Sustainable Neighbourhoods
Sustainable Neighbourhoods is about community members working together to make their neighbourhood more sustainable. We create a range of projects, events and activities that:
  • protect and enhance our natural environment;
  • reduce our use of resources (energy, water and waste);
  • increase our community's capacity to respond effectively to environmental threats (like bushfire or flooding); and
  • increase community wellbeing and pride in our local areas.
Our website, www.sustainableneighbourhoods.org.au, has heaps of info about finding a group near you, upcoming projects and activities, past projects, how you can get involved, and more.

Join in!
New members are always welcome.  You can get involved in projects, join a group near you, help plan the next project or just keep informed via this email list, or our Facebook page. We usually have a bunch of events coming up that you are more than welcome to attend. While Coronavirus has of course meant that we've postponed or cancelled our events for now, we look forward to meeting you face to face when we can.

Here's some info below from our latest newsletter. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to discuss.

Cheers,
Rachelle

Supporting National Tree Day
Do you want to support National Tree Day on 1 August this year? We are asking our local Sustainable Neighbourhood groups to connect with local Landcarers, and offer your support to run a National Tree Day event at their established Landcare site.
To get involved you can:
  • Approach your local Landcarers and encourage them to do a NTD event at their site.
  • Offer extra volunteers to participate on the day, and/or assist with preparations. As an Alliance we will also be able to offer promotional assistance in the lead up.
  • Please note that any NTD event will need to be at an established Landcare site, and in accordance with their existing action plan.
  • Landcarers will need to notify the Landcare Resouce Centre on 4921 0392 or  lro@lakemac.nsw.gov.au as soon as possible (by the end of May at the latest) so that plant orders will be ready in time.
Create an artwork for Waste to Art 2021

This year our exhibition will be held from 9 October to 18 December across four locations in Belmont, Charlestown, Swansea and Toronto.
Start collecting materials and creating your artworks. Registrations close 31 August 2021.

Litter Congress report
A couple of Sustainable Neighbourhood members recently attended the Keep Australia Beautiful 2021 Litter Congress, and reported on a number of interesting topics and programs. Here's a few examples.
  • National Plastics Plan - outlines the Australian Government approach to increase plastic recycling, find alternatives to unnecessary plastics and reduce the impact of plastic on the environment.
  • NSW has seen a 40% decrease in litter, mostly due to Return and Earn, which has also delivered more than $180 million to charities.
  • Swap for good - Northern Beaches Council program to support businesses to move away from single use plastics.
  • Responsible cafes - Program to support cafes to reduce waste and carbon emissions. Almost 5000 registered cafes to date.
  • No more butts - Awareness, education and clean up campaigns to prevent cigarette butt litter and waste.
  • Multi waste collection points trial - Terracycle and Woolworths are trialling in-store waste collection points for coffee capsules, beauty packaging and home cleaning packaging.
Green Caffeen
Green Caffeen is a reusable cup system, currently rolling out around Lake Macquarie and Hunter region cafes.
Customers just need to download and sign in to the Green Caffeen app, find a participating cafe, and then enjoy your next cup of coffee in a reusable cup. You can take the cup with you, and return to any participating cafe within 30 days. Cafes wash the cups as they are returned, and save on the cost of single use packaging.
Green Caffeen is free for customers and cafes. To make sure there are plenty of cups in the system, customers are charged a $12.99 fee if the cup is not returned within 30 days.
Find a participating cafe at greencaffeen.com.au/cafe-finder. Cafes can find out more, and become a cafe of choice for conscious consumers at greencaffeen.com.au/cafe-join.

We have a range of resources and policies to help you organise your group and events.
Please ensure your group submits a risk assessment, at least 7 days prior (21 days is better!), when planning a new activity, for approval from the Alliance Board.
