Abril was born in Guatemala, came to the US five years ago and started at Everett MS. She is unafraid and actively seeks new challenges for herself.
"I am part of the teacher academy in my high school, which I love because I love children."

Alicia attended Alvarado ES & Hoover MS. She is a remarkable human being and an intelligent student. "I am a person who has learned to navigate two cultures, struggled with learning disabilities, and persevered academically."

Belinda Lopez Velasquez, Balboa

Belinda attended Cleveland ES & Denman MS. She is a warm hearted and selfless young woman who is dedicated to social justice. "I am a Guatemalan American who is very proud of her culture. Being part of a Latino community has taught me to never stop dreaming. I have realized that I have a passion for helping others."

Carolina Irizarry, Independence

Carolina eagerly rises to meet and exceed demands of her responsibilities including as a resource and mentor for other youth. "To promote social justice I co-founded a No Kids in Cages project with my school to bring awareness about the lives that were being torn apart.  Career Goal: Physical Trainer or Art Therapist

Elisa was born in Guatemala where she had to leave school to work full-time job.
Helping people is my passion and going to college is the first step in this larger dream.

Elvin was born in Guatemala and since his arrival at Marshall, he has attended school and worked full time.
His work ethic and personal story of living here without his family, inspires his peers and educators alike. Elvin is a natural leader and teacher. Mi historia en Guatemala fue demasiada triste. Jacob attended various SF schools including Alvarado ES, Aptos MS & Kipp. He hasn’t always had the easiest time, but he is very accepting and open-minded.
My hope for the future is to have an America/world where we can all live with one another and help each other become better versions of ourselves.

Kalik attended El Dorado ES, moved to Berkeley, then Denman MS and has demonstrated great commitment to his academics by succeeding in honor and AP classes and overcoming learning issues in elementary school. "I am of mixed race, African American and Afro-Peruvian. My mom is an immigrant from Peru, and I will be the first person in my family to go to college.

In SF, Kathya attended Sunnyside ES and Denman MS. She is an active leader that has made an incomparable impact in her community, school, city, and nationwide. "I feel honored that I have been chosen by my peers to be their advocate. I push myself to ask questions that challenge and make others think."

Keya (as she prefers to be called) was born in Honduras, came here by herself when she was 9, and attended Mission Education Center
My life is a rollercoaster, but I’ve learned to bring myself back up and have a positive mindset. I have a big goals and no matter what, I know I will help people.

Lisbeth attended Cesar Chavez ES, Denman MS. Despite challenges, including with her vision, Lisbeth has maturity and commitment. She understands how to use her leadership skills to motivate others to become leaders. She embodies courage, integrity and humility.
I have learned to love myself for who I am. My hopes for the future are to go to college and be an example to my little brothers and to others.

Maria attended Moscone ES & Hoover MS. She exemplifies commitment to school, her classmates and community. She is hardworking, dedicated, determined and very organized.
My biggest passion is singing along with my guitar. Playing the guitar has become a source of joy and as a way for me to calm and center myself. When you give back to your community, you can make a difference and feel proud of yourself.

She is a courageous, determined and loving young mother, student and woman.  I would describe myself as a strong person and a hard worker. I try to be a leader at my school because I want girls to see that they are not alone.

Sandy was born in Guatemala and attended T Marshall HS. She has worked hard to rise above many challenges and become a strong student leader.
I try to continue to challenge myself to do new things and be responsible and focused on all the things that I want to do, like to be prepared for college.

Wendoly was born in Guatemala and came when she was starting HS. She consistently demonstrates a strong desire to learn and grow as a person

Yatziry Beltran, Downtown/CCSF

Yatziry attended Marshall ES, Everett MS, Revere K-8. She, and her whole family, suffers from the trauma of their older brother’s death, who was shot. But Yatziry has a “can do” attitude no matter the obstacles and challenges.
"In my own Yatziry way, which is painful, tough, stressful, being genuine, positive and knowing that I will be successful. I will always push hard.
