Dear All,

Good day to you all. I bring to you a quick monthly update from the VIFAA team on progress made so far post dashboard feedback workshop held in Akosombo on the improvements of the Ghana Fertilizer dashboard.

Prototype Dashboard Feedback and Improvement
  • The Development Gateway (DG) technical team has started the development of the fifteen items stakeholders requested for improvement in the various charts in the Ghana dashboard (please reference the March 2021 update sent to you earlier last month) and are advanced in the completion of these improvements.
  • In addition, DG has discussed with AfricaFertilizer.org on whether to implement improvements on six charts  requested by stakeholders. The following are decisions taken on feedback that needed further discussions and information. These decisions are as follows;
  1. Apparent Fertilizer Consumption
  • Include information about factors leading to drop or rise in the use of fertilizer. Response: This requires qualitative data and will take time to implement. Recommended that since a regional dashboard is being developed, further discussions be done with the regional dashboard team on approach to take
  • There should be notes on the limitations in getting real data on average fertilizer use. E.g., smuggling of fertilizers. Response: This requires qualitative data and will take time to implement. Recommended that since a regional dashboard is being developed, further discussions be done with the regional dashboard team on approach to take
      2. Comparison of Commercial and Subsidized Prices at the Retail Level
  • Include the percentage subsidy per year in the graph to aid analysis. Response: AfricaFertilizer.org to provide published information annual subsidy prices from 2010 to 2020 for review before decision is taken to implement
  • Chart should be able to show the percentages in terms of subsidies to both the government and the farmer on a year-on-year basis. Response: AfricaFertilizer.org to provide published information annual subsidy prices from 2010 to 2020 for review before decision is taken to implement
      3. Fertilizer Retail Price (Map)
  • Improve the trend graphs by adding some pop-up on the graphs to provide further explanation. Response: This requires qualitative data and will take time to implement. Recommended that since a regional dashboard is being developed, further discussions be done with the regional dashboard team on approach to take
      4. The Evolution of Average Retail price Over Time
  • Improve the trend graph by adding some pop-up on the graphs to provide further explanation. Response: This requires qualitative data and will take time to implement. Recommended that since a regional dashboard is being developed, further discussions be done with the regional dashboard team on approach to take
      5. Quarterly International and Ghana Retail Price Trends
  • Map should show and compare prices among project countries. Response: This requires qualitative data and will take time to implement. Recommended that since a regional dashboard is being developed, further discussions be done with the regional dashboard team on approach to take
Cleaning of Ghana Fertilizer Datasets
The focus during April 2021 has been the review of data for four indicators as follows;
  • Fertilizer Retail Price data; In the course of the month AfricaFertilizer.org shared with DG the  fertilizer retail price data for August 2020 to February 2021. This data was cleaned by the DG team and uploaded to the admin.
  • Fertilizer Apparent Consumption data; The team completed the cleaning of 2020 apparent consumption data and uploaded into the admin.
  • Fertilizer Import data; AfricaFertilizer.org will within the month of May 2021 finalize and share withDG the validated trade datasets for 2020. Once this is received, we expect to clean the data and upload into the admin.
  • Fertilizer Cost Build Up (CBU) data: AfricaFertilizer.org is working on the CBU data for Ghana. They will review the data they currently have and share with us. The DG team will go through the data, understand it and indicate the next steps to implement the charts.
Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement for Dashboard Launch

DG and AfricaFertilizer.org have been mapping out stakeholders to understand which new stakeholders to engage on the VIFAA project and which current stakeholders to engage before launch of the dashboard, during the launch and after the launch. Additionally, DG and AfricaFertilizer.org are working on a strategy for the Ghana dashboard launch. The purpose is to ensure the dashboard impacts  as many stakeholders as possible who will require the dashboard to make decisions.

As the months roll out, DG and AfricaFertilizer.org will engage with you on the launch date of the dashboard, and schedule meetings with you as individuals or groups to discuss thematic areas related to the Ghana VIFAA dashboard.

DG is open for questions and comments.

Kind regards,

Raymond
