1) Legal Intern Summer Employment at PEIHRC

The following message is sent on behalf of Brenda Picard.

The PEI Human Rights Commission has received Canada Summer Jobs funding for a Legal Internship providing a law school student with summer employment. We are seeking an applicant for a 10-15 week position between May 17 and August 27, 2021. I have attached the job posting and I would ask you and your staff to circulate or post this opportunity as soon as possible. Please note the application deadline is May 7, 2021.

(Note from PEI Status of Women: Documents cannot be attached to our E-News. Please get in touch with PEIHRC for a copy of the job posting -
contact@peihumanrights.ca)

The position is in Charlottetown, PEI and applicants must meet the definition of youth (15-30), as set out by the Canada Summer Jobs criteria.

The HRC is an equal opportunity employer and would encourage applications from youth (law students or recent graduates) who self identify as being part of an underrepresented group or as having additional barriers from entering the labour market such as new immigrant, indigenous, visible minority, youth with disabilities and LGBTQ2SI+ youth.

Applicants should send a resume and cover letter to Sara Watson at contact@peihumanrights.ca and may choose whether to self identify as indicated above.

Thank you for your assistance.
Brenda Picard, Q.C.

2) Monthly Interfaith Devotional

Greetings,

“At a time when humanity, chastened by the exposure of its vulnerability seems more conscious of the need for collaboration to address global challenges, yet, lingering habits of contest, self-interest, prejudice and closed-mindedness continue to hinder the movement towards unity, despite growing numbers in society who are showing in words and deeds how they, too , yearn for greater acceptance of humanity’s inherent oneness, we are in dire need  to pray that the family of nations may succeed in putting aside its differences in the interests of the common good.”

You are invited to join our monthly virtual interfaith devotional, scheduled to occur on the first Friday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Prince Edward Island/Halifax-(AST/GMT-4) for the duration of approximately one hour.

We are hoping for this space to be an opportunity to unite, enjoy the tranquility and reflect on inspiring themes and common threads that tie us all together. Although we cannot be physically present with one another, the power of prayer can unite, heal, and bring our spirits together.

Our monthly interfaith devotional features a certain topic every month, accompanied by virtual live music, audio-visual pieces, and selections of writings from various faiths, philosophers, authors, leaders and indigenous cultures, from all over the world.

5) Trafficking in Persons in Canada, 2019 | La traite des personnes au Canada, 2019

Trafficking in persons in Canada, 2019
May 4, 2021

(La version français suit)

Today in The Daily published by Statistics Canada  the report “Trafficking in Persons in Canada, 2019” was released. This article profiles human trafficking incidents that came to the attention of Canadian police in 2019. This report was commissioned and funded by Public Safety Canada.

Improving data collection on the scope and scale of human trafficking in Canada is an integral part of Canada’s new National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, which is a whole-of-government approach that will:
  • empower victims and survivors to regain self-confidence and control over their lives;
  • prevent more of these crimes from taking place;
  • better protect those who are most vulnerable to trafficking;
  • prosecute human traffickers for their heinous crimes; and
  • embrace partnerships with provinces and territories and other organizations to maximize our impact.
Visit Public Safety Canada’s website to learn more about the National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking.

La traite des personnes au Canada, 2019
4 mai 2021

  • donner aux victimes et aux survivants les moyens de reprendre confiance en eux et de contrôler leur vie;
  • empêcher qu’un plus grand nombre de ces crimes ne se produisent;
  • mieux protéger les personnes les plus vulnérables à la traite des personnes;
  • poursuivre les trafiquants de personnes pour leurs crimes haineux;
  • Établir des partenariats avec les provinces, les territoires et d’autres organisations afin de maximiser notre impact.

7) Grief/Gratitude Tree

The next time you're at the Voluntary Resource Council (VRC), you are invited to add to the grief/gratitude tree!

This project is led by Hannah Gehrels, a member of the VRC. It's been a tough year and we are all grieving and experiencing loss both collectively and individually. We invite you to honour this grief as well as the healing and possibility that emerges when we put our attention on what we are grateful for. You can write on the tags found in the Tiny Library and attach to the string on the tree. Don't forget to sanitize!
