Reading colors your world at Dubuque County Library this Summer! Join us for this year's Summer Reading Program, where we will be celebrating color, art, and cultural diversity around the world.

Participate in our Summer Reading Challenge by logging in how much you've read to earn prizes. Register starting on June 14 to start reading and journeying to each continent with your Reading Passport. As always, the Reading Challenge is open to all ages, birth through adult!


Your library is offering a plethora of clubs and special events to go along with our Summer Reading themes. Some of them will be held virtually on Zoom, while others will be offered as socially distanced outdoor activities. Registration for all Summer programs is open now!

June 14 - August 7: Summer Reading Challenge
May 1 - May 30: Register for the first 4 weeks of Summer programs and clubs

Body Painting (Family/All Ages)
Learn about the history of henna and other forms of body painting, then turn your arms into a temporary work of art.

How Beeswax Becomes Balm with the Iowa Honey Queen
Sponsored by the Dubuque Swiss Valley Bee Club, we will be visited by the 2021 Iowa Honey Queen, Abigail Kelley. She will be be conducting demos on how to make products from beeswax. Both sessions will meet at Swiss Valley Park, in the first pavilion on the left past the creek.

Kayaking with Dubuque Conservation (Ages 10+)
We'll be meeting experts from Dubuque Conservation Board at the water to learn kayaking basics at the Mines of Spain Catfish Creek at the Julien Dubuque Access. Park at Catfish Creek Foot Trail Lot. Limit of 15 people per session.

Pop-up Story Walk (Family/All Ages)
A temporary story walk about seeds and growing will "pop up" at Althaus Park in Asbury in the trail loop around the pond. Drop by anytime during the pop up time to read a picture book as you walk around the pond, do an activity with Leah from Iowa State Extension and Outreach, and pick up a simple, take-home kit with a craft and activity sheets from Dubuque County Library.

Road Less Traveled Theatre Preview (Family/All Ages)
Join us for a sneak peak of part of the 2021 summer children's production by the Road Less Traveled Theatre, a retelling of Shakespeare's fantastical play The Tempest.

Bizarre History of Iowa (Family/All Ages)
This program provides a time portal back to the early days of the state when it was filled with strange deaths, ghosts, sea serpents, peculiar people, medical anomalies, psychic phenomena, and UFOs.

Kids' Table Cooking Classes (Family/All Ages)
Join us for two live virtual cooking classes with a professional chef from The Kids' Table in Chicago, as they walk you through the recipes from start to finish. An adult must be present. Recipes and lists of ingredients and necessary supplies will be emailed to you prior to the program.

Mowing for Monarchs (Ages 16+)

Track Summer Reading with ReadSquared

Starting June 14, register yourself and your family members at dubcolib.readsquared.com or find the ReadSquared app to easily log in from your phone or mobile device. If you do not have access to a device or reliable Internet at home, stop by the library or call your local branch to have them log in your reading.

Earn points by reading, listening to audiobooks, attending programs, and completing missions. Points earned go towards earning badges. When a badge is earned, a prize is awarded. There are two sets of dates for prize pick-ups - July 8-10 for prizes earned by July 1, and August 12-14 for prizes earned by August 7.
