Weekly Update from Peoples Church

A Reflection from Rev. Harris

Dear Church,

Today is the National Day of Prayer, the 2021 theme comes from 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now is the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” We believe that God is a liberator who frees us from the powers of sin, hell, and the grave. This liberating God redeems us from forces both personal and systemic to lead us to life and it more abundantly. On this National Day of Prayer let us pray for the World, Our Nation, Our City, Our Church, Our family, friends, and neighbors. Let us pray that God’s liberating spirit will bring an end to gun violence, mass incarceration, racism, and racial injustice. Let us pray that God’s spirit will renew us once again and fill us with God’s glory!

Blessings,
Rev. Brandon Harris

Housing Justice…Let’s Take a Stand!!

DC Council Chairman Mendelson introduced the latest version of the Amendments to the DC Comprehensive Plan on April 19th. The initial vote was on May 4th and the final vote is expected on May 18th.  The Potomac Association Justice and Witness Committee, DC Organizing Team (including representation from Cleveland Park, Covenant Baptist, Faith, First Congregational, and Plymouth) has been working with the DC Grassroots Planning Coalition led by Empower DC to effect changes in the amendments that would promote the expansion of suitable housing for low income predominantly Black and Brown residents of the District of Columbia. Even the Council’s Committee on Racial Equity (CORE) has noted that as presented the bill “would exacerbate racial inequities in the District of Columbia”.  Although improvements have been made, the current bill still falls short of producing and preserving adequate housing for low-income Black and Brown residents and fails to adequately afford the opportunity for community members and current residents to have a meaningful voice in the planning, implementation, and oversight of development. We need your help. Please write, email, text, and/or call Chairman Mendelson, your Ward Councilperson, and Council At-large members. Post your concerns on Facebook, Twitter, or other social media that you may use. Maryland and Virginia residents can send messages, too! Reference your location of worship and other reasons that the District of Columbia is important to you. See the Action Tool Kit for more details and background information.
