InterActions LA: Guaranteed Income and Paths to Prosperity

Economic relief to individuals is playing a major role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Expanded unemployment payments and sporadic federal relief checks provided cash to people struggling to make rent and buy food. These pandemic-related cash supports are drawing attention to the role that guaranteed income programs can play in helping individuals get out of poverty.

InterActions LA will bring together the latest thinking and action on the opportunities and applications around moving toward a guaranteed income for people who could benefit in the Los Angeles region.

The Compton Pledge is a landmark guaranteed income initiative that will distribute recurring cash relief to low-income residents for 2 years, marking the largest city-based guaranteed income pilot in the U.S. Launched in December 2020, the Compton Pledge has already disbursed $1 million to support more than 1,770 recipients, including dependents.

In 2018, The Magnolia Mother's Trust began providing $1,000/month to 20 low-income Black mothers in Jackson, Miss. In that first year, more than $10,000 in predatory debt was paid off. Every participant said they had enough money to meet their basic needs and felt hopeful about the future.

The New Leaf Project provides a one-time $7,500 cash transfer to people experiencing recent homelessness in Vancouver. On average, cash recipients moved into stable housing in three months and spent 4,396 fewer nights homeless over a 12-month period, compared to individuals who did not receive cash assistance.

In San Francisco, a Black infant is almost twice as likely to be born prematurely compared to a white infant (13.8% vs. 7.3%). Pacific Islander babies have the second-highest rate (11%). The Abundant Birth Project aims to address these inequities by providing monthly cash assistance to Black and PI pregnant women.
