How to Spot a Fake Check Scam

In the midst of the pandemic and government stimulus payments, fake check scams are on the rise. The method may vary, but the scammer's goal is always the same - to get you to deposit a couterfeit check into your bank account, and then return a portion of the money to them right away. To help you avoid a scam, there are a few things you can look for:
  • A prospective buyer sends you a check for more than your asking price “by mistake” and wants the overage back
  • You receive your first check for a new work-from-home job, and the “employer” asks you to send some money back right away for supplies
  • You receive a check for sweepstakes winnings that can only be claimed by sending some money back to cover taxes

Do You Have Porchfest Feedback?

Webster Band Atlanta

Initial reports are that the first Porchfest event organized by the Virginia Highland District Association went off without any significant safety concerns and residents and visitors alike enjoyed the day of music, food trucks, 5K run, and more. If you did have any issues or have safety related suggestions, please let us know so that we can pass them on for future events.

Note that the Virginia-Highland District Association is a new organization and not affiliated with the Virginia-Highland Civic Association, Virginia-Highland Conservation League, Virginia-Highland Security Patrol, or Neighborhood Watch.

Crime Statistics

Please be aware that thefts from auto continue to be high with an average of 20.5 incidents per month. It appears that we may have some repeat offenders as multiple vehicles are being hit in the same parking lots on different nights. Remember the clear car campaign - remove all items from your vehicle or place them out of sight no matter the value, and encourage visitors and business patrols to do the same.
