Despite colonisation and brutal attitudes and treatment towards Indigenous people, Indigenous people remain strong within the modern agricultural landscape, holding 40% of Australia's landmass and representing 1% of the agricultural workforce. Yet despite this involvement, there has been a push that Indigenous culture should remain static, that there is a limit to Indigenous involvement to native foods. Unfortunately, perceptions remained locked in a view that agriculture and colonisation are one.

This presentation looks at Indigenous identity through agriculture, arguing that an Aboriginal person farming today is as authentically Aboriginal as what they would have been 200 years ago- the same people, but just a people in change. It will provide some initial insights into answering how did Aboriginal people adapt and survive through agriculture and what the future of this involvement may look like.
