Kia ora neighbours and friends,

We hope this update finds you all well and looking forward to your weekend!

Our streetscape teams have been busy this week bringing in trees and planting the raingardens, while our marine team are busy working to have Te Wānanga ready for you mid-next month.

If we could take this opportunity to remind all users of Quay Street (pedestrians, cyclists, scooters and those behind the wheel) to please be mindful of each other and travel carefully on your journeys.

Kia kaha, don't forget to keep using your NZ COVID Tracer app ♥

Project WAVE on Lower Hobson Street

Not part of the Downtown Programme
Auckland Transport is looking to improve access for people on bikes by connecting the Nelson Street Cycleway to the Viaduct and Quay Street Cycleway, by building a cycleway along Market Place, Customs Street West and Lower Hobson Street (LHS).

Key messaging
  • Construction of the LHS cycle lane is programmed to be complete by Wednesday 12 May.
  • LHS is down to one lane only Monday through Friday, however detours to Quay Street, Viaduct and Princes Wharf will be utilised for general traffic if volumes are too high.
  • From 12 May LHS is programmed to return to 1x two way cycle lane, 1x general traffic  /loading zone lane & 1x general traffic  /bus lane.

For more Project Wave information and associated impacts, please visit AT.govt.nz/projectWAVE, or email WAVE@at.govt.nz with any queries or concerns.

Overnight Quay Street lane closures

Until end-May 2021
7.30pm to 05.00am

Key messaging

Most nights until the end of May there will be STOP-GO, lane and footpath closures in localised sections so we can safely bring in and plant the remainder of the trees.

The cycle lane is not a footpath

Quay Street has returned to one lane in each direction and with the opening of the new cycleway and the northern footpath, we all need to take time to adjust to the new street layout.
  • If you are driving and turning into or out of Queens Wharf please watch out for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the entrance.
  • If you are walking, please be aware that the cycleway is separated and prioritised for people on bikes. Stay out of the cycleway and remember to stand back when you are waiting to cross Quay Street at pedestrian crossing points.
  • If you are on your bike, follow the signals and be cautious when you are crossing the Princes Wharf or Queen's Wharf entrance.

Ferry Basin Redevelopment - Stage 1

The Ferry Basin Redevelopment project is an integral part of the $350 million Downtown Programme, and will see the creation of six new berths in the Ferry Basin.

It is another step towards modern, consolidated ferry infrastructure for Auckland. It will have improved accessibility and greater operational flexibility, which will help accommodate increased passenger numbers.

The new Ferry Basin infrastructure has just been handed over to Auckland Transport to commence commissioning and trials, and is expected to be open and operational for ferry passengers early July 2021.
