'Are people interested in Jesus?'
Message by Pr Simon Gigliotti
I’ve often heard it said that people in our city are not interested in Jesus. ‘They’re too affluent, distracted with the lures of life, and very much comfortable in their own space.
While I do agree that there are plenty of distractions, I totally disagree that people aren’t interested in Jesus!
Here’s why - In Matthew 9:35-38 the Bible tells us that after looking a upon a crowd of “harassed and helpless” people Jesus said – “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few”.
‘Harassed and helpless’ are the key words here. Or, as another translation says – “distressed and dispirited”. Do we really believe there aren’t many “harassed and helpless” or “distressed and dispirited” people in our city?
What about the people dealing with anxiety, the people dealing with stress, or the people that have the overwhelming feeling that they lack purpose? I still believe the harvest is plentiful! In fact, maybe it’s not that people aren’t interested in Jesus, but more so, as Jesus said, that ‘the workers are few’.
We don’t have to stay in that place. God has a better plan!
Here’s what we can do today:
- Grab a friend and ask God to lead you both to someone who is open to Jesus (Luke 10:17;16) – there are heaps of people!
- When God leads you to that person, pray for them with your friend (and in your personal prayer time), care for them in a tangible way, and as the Holy Spirit leads - look for an opportunity to share Jesus with them.
- As you journey with this person over the year, build a friendship with them, and begin to share Jesus with them, consider engaging them in Church life. You could Invite them to a youth social, a Life Group, your local Church, or the Common Ground Youth Rally taking place on November 13. The Holy Spirit will lead you in this – giving you wisdom to make the right call at the right time (Luke 12:11-12).
May God bless and empower you as you share Jesus today!!
