Juliana Davis and Gursimar Tonk.  They are both juniors and will help represent the PTSA in student congress and hopefully help engage our JHS students to our PTSA work.  Both girls attended the WSPTA convention and started learn more about the PTA mission.

It has been a pleasure serving as your president these past two very unique years.  I am advancing my PTA leadership to serve as the WSPTA Program Director for the next two years.

2021 JHS PTSA Senior Scholarship Winners
Henry M Jackson High PTSA is proud to award a $500 scholarships each to 2 deserving graduating seniors for the 2020-2021 school year.

The purpose of the PTSA senior scholarship program is to help JHS seniors further their education at the post secondary institution of their choice. Recipients are recognized because they exemplify excellence in academics, school pride and involvement at Jackson.

The PTSA scholarship committee received many outstanding applications this year.

We would like to congratulate this year’s recipients Sabrina Nelson and David Hyun. Sabrina  will attend Barrett the Honors College at Arizona State University and David will study University of Washington.
Congratulations to our volunteer coordinator, Beenish Iqbal, for earning a bronze leadership service award along with several other Everett Council members.
Even though the school year is drawing to a close, this does not mean that advocacy isn’t still happening. Your school’s administrators will still be working through the summer.  You can also reach out to school board members as well. These can be informal chats about what worked and what you would like to see happen next year. This is a chance to continue to build and nurture some great relationships. The summer is also a good time to reach out to legislators as they are not as busy with the session being over. Think about an event you might have in the fall you can invite them to.

Lastly, I would like to encourage people to sign up for WSPTA’s “All About Advocacy” event Marie Sullivan, our legislative consultant, will be hosting on June 8, 6:30-7:30 PM, to talk about the most recent budget passed as well as wrapping up the legislative session. Marie will also have time to answer questions that you may still have after her presentation. You can register here (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/all-about-advocacy-tickets-153387930429). If you can’t make the event, we will be recording it for you to view.  I do not know how long it will take for the recording to be posted so check the WSPTA website for it after the event.

Thank you,

Lizzy Sebring
Council Advocacy Chair & incoming WSPTA Legislative Director
It has certainly been a crazy year and I am so appreciative of the great team of leaders that we had serving on the PTSA BOD this year.
  • Denise Constantineau & Michelle Nims as the scholarship chairs
  • Katie Stark as our staff appreciation chair, fundraising guru and social media specialist
  • Alisha Crawley-Davis as the website master
  • Beenish Iqbal as our volunteer and community engagement coordinator
  • Larissa Pfeifer for running our Reflections program
  • Michelle Williams as VP of membership
  • Joanna Ghosh as secretary
  • Michelle Thomas as our treasurer
For some of these ladies, this was their first year at JHS and for others, they have been mentoring leaders here for some time.

A big shout out to Stephanie Powell for serving as our staff liaison again this year and to Mr. Balla for always providing a school update at our meetings.  Let's not forget Sukawt Al-Mansouri who has been our communication lead with the school.

Thank you to all our parents that have donated money, time and food this year for our programs.

District News
What will the 2021-22 school year look like?
Everett Public Schools, like other districts in our region, state and nationally, are planning on opening 100% in person in the fall. The anticipation is great as students may be entering a school for the first time or may not have seen their classmates in person for over a year. We look forward to the energy as the new year kicks off.

All staff will be back in the buildings. Students will be learning in-person. We know that nothing is 100% guaranteed in the future, but we are moving forward with this plan and encourage you to anticipate learning in person in the fall. We are looking into virtual opportunities for students and will share more about that in the future.

When does school end this year?
The last day of school this year is Monday, June 21st, and will be an asynchronous day. The day will be used for device and material drop off and pick up. We will be sending more information soon. June 15 is the last day of synchronous learning for seniors.

Care Solace resource
Everett Public Schools fosters a culture that promotes the health, safety and well-being of students, parents and staff. In an effort to continuously support this commitment, the district has partnered with Care Solace.

Care Solace is an online resource with a live 24/7 concierge meant to assist individuals in finding local mental health-related programs and counseling services. Care Solace is a tool for school staff and families to connect with community-based mental healthcare resources and providers. Their proprietary care navigation system taps into a vast database of mental healthcare resources to find carefully vetted local therapists and programs in minutes. Care Solace is available for use by district families and staff at no cost.

Stuff the Bus is coming!
With the support of our generous community, the Everett Public Schools Foundation is hosting its 12th annual Stuff the Bus for Kids school supply drive. This year the need is greater than ever. We need your help to deliver over 2,200 backpacks to Everett Public Schools students and families this fall. Look for collection bins at local businesses during the month of August and look for big yellow Durham school buses parked outside Fred Meyer in Mill Creek and QFC on Evergreen Way Aug. 13-15.  For questions, please contact Kirsten Hansen at khansen@everettsd.org.

What Every Parent Needs to Know video series
The Everett PTSA Council collaborated with Everett Public
Schools staff and Washington Family Engagement to develop video resources for families which provide fundamental information to navigate school systems, advocate for their student(s), and actively participate in public education.

The project of five videos, entitled "What Every Parent Needs to Know," provides an overview of topics that parents felt were essential for building a foundation for authentic parent and family engagement. Video topics include: Student Education Rights, Get Engaged in Your Children's Education, What to Do About Bullying, Advocating for Your Student and Understanding Public Schools.

The initial material was created by Washington Family Engagement and further reviewed by parent and community groups, as well as Everett School District staff, to ensure accuracy, relevancy, and access. The videos were recorded by various district staff and are available on the district’s Parent University webpage, with translations recorded and available in Spanish, and subtitles in Russian, Vietnamese, and Arabic.

WSPTA 2021 Power of Connection Annual Convention Recap
We had 3 JHS delegates (multiple BOD members attended but voted on behalf of our feeder school PTAs) vote on amendments to the WSPTA Uniform Bylaws and Electing and installing the 2021-2023 WSPTA Board of Directors.  By sending delegates, our new board has met some requirements of SOA training including PTA and the Law. A variety of classes including several on mental health and diversity (that's right not all classes at convention are PTA leadership specific) were attended along with networking with leaders from all across the state by using the Whova convention app.  We listened to inspiring speakers like Caylin Moore, National PTA president, Leslie Boggs, and teacher of the year, Brooke Brown.  We also came away with several ideas that we will try to use next year at JHS!

Senior Graduation Parade 2021

The City of Mill Creek wants to recognize all graduating seniors in the Mill Creek community by organizing a graduation parade procession at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021. This has been a difficult year for the graduates of 2021 as the pandemic virus has canceled so many of their traditional recognition events.

The parade is a way to celebrate students during this difficult year and celebrate their ability to overcome the obstacles from the pandemic.  The parade capacity is limited to 250 cars for all graduating seniors in the Mill Creek area. The parade route is approximately seven miles long and begins at Jackson High School, 1508 136th St. SE, in Mill Creek. The route will end at the intersection of Mill Creek Boulevard and Bothell-Everett Highway (SR 527).
Seniors are encouraged to decorate their vehicles for the parade with balloons, glass chalk or window paint, poster boards, etc. Community members are asked to cheer on the students as they drive by and to decorate their homes.
Home window signs are available for community members on the City’s website to print and display at their homes. Signs will include various school crests, and offer an easy for our residents to show support for our graduates.
The City of Mill Creek recommends a parent, or non-graduating student drive, so graduates may participate in waving and enjoy the parade route as a passenger. Students are welcome to carpool together and follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.
Register your car for the parade at the Senior Graduates Parade on the SignUpGenius website. All participants in the parade must complete one of the following waivers:
Review the Traffic Safety Reminders for the Parade Route here.

Parents interested in volunteering may sign up to Volunteer on the SignUpGenius website.

Find and print a Mill Creek Class of 2021 Window Sign listed by school here

Assembly takes place at 9 a.m. and the procession begins at 10 a.m. Students checking-in for the Senior Graduation Parade will be need to access the one-way road behind the Jackson High School Gym towards the entrance to the Commons. Drivers will turn right at the stop sign by the tennis courts and turn right to head East into the Parking lot.
