The Shire of Esperance is opening the second phase of consultation into the proposed James Street Cultural Precinct, which aims to position the area as a hub for culture, tourism and history for the town.
The consultation will gather feedback from the community and stakeholders via an online survey as well as group and one-on-one feedback sessions.
Three “scenarios” outlining potential layouts of the Precinct have been created using feedback received during the first round of consultation, which took place in September 2020.
The Precinct builds upon the Esperance Town Centre Revitalisation Master Plan 2015-2035, which identifies a cohesive vision for James Street that incorporates the existing history and current culture of the area, whilst also looking towards the future needs of the Esperance community.
Esperance Shire President Ian Mickel said the engagement was an integral part of developing the Precinct.
“The James Street Precinct is an area that is special to a lot of people for a lot of reasons,” he said.
“We need to find out what the current and future needs of our community are so we can tailor the facilities to meet them.
“I encourage everyone to take part in the engagement process so you can provide us with your valuable feedback.”
Shire of Esperance CEO Shane Burge said this round of consultation will give the community a good chance to tailor the Precinct to their specific needs.
“Though we have developed three scenarios, these are not the be-all and end-all,” he said.
“I encourage everyone to let us know what elements they like and dislike from each scenario so the final design best meets the vision we all have for the area.
“Everyone has a different perspective and use for the area and this information is what we’re trying to gather through this phase of consultation.”
