>> OYSTER Mentorship Programme
Don't forget that EuroMarine's early career researchers group OYSTER have launched their new Mentorship Programme! General Assembly members are still welcome to volunteer and OYSTER asks that all recipients of the newsletter advise interested mentees they can learn more about the programme and mentors here. Applicants or interested mentors/mentees should e-mail mentorship@euromarinenetwork.eu.

>> Updates to Funded Activities
Due to the impacts of the ongoing pandemic on research, travel and events many of the EuroMarine-funded activities which were due to take place over the last year and a half have been postponed and/or adapted into remote events. Activity leaders are reminded to contact the Communications Office as soon as new dates are established. In the meantime, please visit the website to remain updated on internally-funded activities.

>> FWS TUTTI: From Species Connectivity to Functional Connectivity, 3-5 May 2021, Online
The EuroMarine funded foresight workshop TUTTI is being held remotely from 3 May to 5 May. This fully-booked workshop will work towards a framework that allows a close interaction between research in structural and functional connectivity and ecosystem dynamics, combining  modelling and empiricist expertise.

>> FWS MUMSUMED: Toward Multi-Species Management of Sea Urchins in the Mediterranean, 18 May 2021, Online
In Mediterranean coastal areas, a common side effect of overfishing is a trophic cascade leading to sea urchin outbreaks. The EuroMarine funded Foresight Workshop MUMSUMED will focus on developing comprehensive solutions for Mediterranean systems, integrating both scientific and end-users perspectives with a critical assessment of feasibility and desirability of outcomes. Details on how to register can be found on the activity page.

Registration deadline: 10 May 2021

Job opportunities

PhD on genetic population structure of Baltic Sea eelgrass, University of Gothenburg (Sweden)

This PhD project will focus on population genomic assessments of a seagrass in the Baltic Sea to provide a baseline for future temporal conservation genetic monitoring of eelgrass in Sweden. Investigating into local adaptation, genetic demographic modelling and species distribution modelling can then help to address persistence and adaptation potential under predicted climate change.

Application deadline: 9 May 2021

Miscellaneous

Obstinate Nature: New book by Philippe Cury and Daniel Pauly

Obstinate Nature is centrally concerned with the imbalance in those dynamics that currently threatens our planet, our environment, and our survival. Since our emergence as a species, Homo sapiens has overridden the slow and cyclical natural order in the ceaseless pursuit of faster everything: population growth, territorial expansion, food cultivation, and technological development. Now, as climate change and declining resources push us ever closer to the brink of collapse, the true test of a sustainable future will be whether we can reconcile our perpetual thirst for linear acceleration with the painstaking natural cycles that allowed us to exist in the first place.

Compilation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) data obtained from global ocean observations from 1994 to 2020

This compilation consists of measurements of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and other chemical and hydrographic parameters obtained during the global ocean observations from 1994-01-01 to 2019-12-31. Measurements of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the open ocean have increased greatly since the late 1980's, spurred by the growth in scientific interest directed at the ocean carbon cycle.
