May 2021
I have begun mentoring a young girl on the Seacoast. We were matched because we both love to read. Want to know what our first activity together will be? Reading the same book and then discussing it in our own micro-book club, over ice cream. This idea, this action, of reading the same book is so simple but I believe that it also holds a little bit of magic. First, this young girl has found that there’s a grown-up willing to read a book she selects. Second, this friendship we’re building will get its first insights from what parts of the book made each of us laugh or get angry or cry. Finally, the gulf between a stranger and a friend can be bridged by paper, and cardboard, and thousands of black letters. If you want to get to know someone or get to know them better, read their books.

Visiting Our National Parks: Lessons Learned
Virtual Presentation with John Bunker
Monday, May 24th at 7:00 PM
John Bunker resides in Stratham and has visited twenty-five national parks during the past two decades. While serving as the Associate Dean, UNH College of Health and Human Services, he developed a presentation for an undergraduate class on his adventures and misadventures to some of his favorite national parks: Badlands, Bryce, Canyonlands, Glacier, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Zion.

His presentation will include a handout of his Ten Lessons Learned, a YouTube video of hiking Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park, and over 70 images of his travels to the Parks. Learn about a broad range of issues related to visiting our national Parks: lodging and dining, budget considerations, logistics and planning activities, and safety.

Historically Speaking
As described earlier, the [Eastern] railroad came through Hampton in 1840 and immediately changed the community. The commercial center of town, which had been at the Landing on the river, moved to the center of the Village, and people began to set their watches by the numerous trains passing north and south. People had quick and inexpensive transportation on the train, and the freight cars, bringing grain and coal, soon replaced the old coastal schooners. Most of Hampton's business activity eventually centered on buildings constructed adjacent to the Exeter Road crossing, where the railroad placed its passenger and freight depots and a large water tank. This arrangement remained for some 60 years, until 1900, when the various overpasses were built, the line was double-tracked, and the stores were relocated along Lafayette Road.

Emily Ford Hiked 1,200 Miles in the Dead of Winter
In March, Emily Ford became the first woman to complete Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail in winter. She’s also become an unintentional ambassador of the outdoor industry’s quest for inclusivity. "Ford loves the silence and solitude that hiking affords—or, rather, the awareness of how loud nature can be and how deafening feet crunching snow or a porcupine chewing a tree is when there’s nothing else around."  Read the full article on Outside.
