A Message from the new Family Caregiver Support Advocate

My name is Denise (Denny) Darby. I am your new Family Caregiver Support Advocate. I have lived in Juneau since 2016. I have four children and three grandchildren. After meeting some of you, I feel humbled and awed by the sheer force of love and support demonstrated for your loved ones. Please contact me at 463-6181, or send an email at denise.darby@ccsjuneau.org and let me know how Southeast Senior Services can serve you better.
May is Older Americans Month
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens met to address the growing concerns of America’s 17 million individuals ages 65 and older. At the time, one-third of all seniors lived in poverty with few social programs available to help support them.

To raise awareness of the problems facing seniors and to honor them, then-President Kennedy and the Council proclaimed May as Senior Citizens Month. Two years later, in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Older Americans Act of 1965 and formally declared May as Older Americans Month. Seniors, let’s rock the month of May!

Books You Should Read
Sometimes being a Caregiver can become so overwhelming that we find ourselves bogged down with feelings of seriousness and depression. The title is admittedly silly, some of you might find it enjoyable and full of useful information. Although this book is a bit out of date (2003), the reviews have been highly favorable.

"The BEST book on elder care." -  Sandra Terp
"This is the ONLY BOOK I have found that is sensible, down to earth, and concerned with the feelings of the elderly. So often we tend to disconnect emotions when we concentrate on physical care. This book addresses both, with practical advice on care and sensitive advice on how to provide a meaningful life.”
