Hello, <<First Name>>! I hope your summer is off to a great start! We're beginning a new enewsletter for some special donors like yourself. You are so committed to the work of Hopeful Horizons and I thought you might like a deep dive into our work. I'll only send this occasionally and I hope you find it useful. Please feel free to reach out to me or Erin with feedback about this enewsletter - or tell us other information you'd like to see here.

Our Strengthening Families Program (SFP) was just recognized as "exceeding program standards" by the statewide assessment team. In the exit surveys, 18 out of 20 parents said they had been successful in implementing skills taught in SFP. The evaluation showed that family communication increased and family conflict decreased. Child concentration, depression and aggression went down, while social skills increased. According to the report, the positive changes in Parental Involvement and Positive Parenting mark a shift from a punishment/aversion based parenting style to a reward-based and nurturing style of parenting in order to achieve the relationships and behaviors most likely to reduce child maltreatment.

SFP is a nationally recognized, evidence-based 14-week program for families, designed to reduce the potential for child abuse. Read more about the program here

I wanted to share this recent success with you too ... A Spanish-speaking victim of domestic violence recently graduated from Hopeful Horizons’ therapy services, which she completed via our telehealth platform. The client was assisted on her journey of healing by one of our clinicians who worked in tandem with one of our bilingual advocates to ensure she received services in her native language. I'm happy to report that she and her son are now thriving!

Thank you for making success possible for survivors of abuse!

Behind the Scenes at Our Walterboro Office
Since opening our Walterboro office in March, we've completed 26 forensic interviews (the gathering of information from a victim or witness for prosecution and use in court) and have received 34 referrals for clients requesting counseling. Our partners in Hampton and Colleton counties have said how helpful the new office has been for the families they are working with. Those same partners are excited that there will be therapy available at the new office.

Nonprofit News
new report from the Women’s Philanthropy Institute (WPI) analyzes the first new data in 15 years on household charitable decision-making. As gender norms and family dynamics have changed in recent years, so has the way that couples make decisions about giving. Read more here.

How Did Covid-19 impact giving from Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)? Here's the research.

Update on Tax Deductions
Nonprofit leaders might be girding themselves for the possibility of having to fend off the return of a proposal that would cap tax deductions for higher-income households, potentially hurting charitable giving. Here's an update from Together SC and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).
An Evening with Hopeful Horizons
Wondering where our gala is? In light of Covid, we're making some changes. We hope to have an online event this fall and we are customizing small "at home" events for those interested in hearing more about the work of Hopeful Horizons. Please contact Erin Hall if you're interested in hosting a small, personalized event. We are also ready to meet (carefully) in person or give tours of our offices.
