How Clever Marketing Impacted Body Image

The creation of negative body image is the largest coup of marketing history. The birth of marketing and advertising in the 1920s paved the way for suggestive and persuasive marketing. Various firms and corporations latched on to this financially lucrative approach. Society’s perception of beauty, health, success, and status was hijacked.

This robbery denied bodies of different shapes, sizes, and forms to be recognized for their individual beauty. Brands, companies, and businesses began to define the ideal body aesthetic. I stumbled upon body neutrality last year and found the idea intriguing and refreshing. Considering I was never completely sold on body positivity. It's not that I find the body positive movement inherently wrong or anything. But, for me, it was toxic. 

Disordered Eating, Diet Culture,
and Invisible Illness

 
I've silently struggled with disordered eating behaviors since I was a teenager. My ongoing issues with body dysmorphia and undiagnosed endometriosis created a pretty toxic relationship with food. Struggling with food intolerances that triggered IBS-like symptoms. 
 

I suck at dieting because I refuse to follow strict rules. There was a point and time dieting plagued my existence. I was consumed with finding the “right” diet to follow. And, had to make sure I was consuming the “right” foods. Because if I didn’t remain vigilant about what I put in my body one of two things would happen. One, I’d become obese and not be desirable anymore superficial but honest. We live in a society that glorifies thin bodies while shaming "fat" bodies. Second I feared developing health issues and complications. Unfortunately, this isn't necessarily true. You can't "diet" your way out of invisible illness.

Body dysmorphia and negative body image are sometimes used interchangeably when discussing an unhealthy body image. While both are serious and contribute to an increase in eating disorders, disordered eating, and mental health complications they are two separate issues. The main differentiating factor being one is a psychiatric disorder and the other is not. Understanding the difference can aid in proper awareness and treatment.
