Don't miss your opportunity to meet one of Ryann's favorite personas about 11 minutes into the video!

TO HAVE A GREAT TIME ALL THE TIME, PLAY WITH YOUR PERSONAS.

Everybody has personas, roles we still carry. We all learned to wear different roles just as we learned to wear different clothes and change expressions when certain people were around. You bring a whole circus of personas to your relationships. The problem is taking them seriously and thinking that your persona is the entirety of who YOU are. Your essence lies at the center of all these layers you’ve learned to wear to get along. If you want to move beyond fitting in, stop working on your personas and start playing with them and getting to know them. Every persona is held together by the way you hold your posture. So if you exaggerate your ‘tude, your gestures, your tone, you start to loosen the grip of personas and to accept and include more your facets. For instance, your perfectionist melts into the keen giving of attention, or your victim gets loved and starts to giggle. Every persona has a gift that can expand your evolution. When you make friends with your personas, you can have nonstop fun. Persona play has no expiration date, so you can enjoy polishing your facets lifelong.

Promoting the culture of diversity is important for all professions, but it is especially lacking in the legal field. In fact, the legal profession is among the least diverse professions in the United States.  Diversity and inclusion in the legal organizations help lawyers to identify and embrace different backgrounds and contribute to the overall advancement of the profession. There are several factors that impede the prevalence of diversity in the legal field, including the retention of diverse lawyers within the profession.  Join our panel of experts as we discuss how to overcome these obstacles by providing growth opportunities for minority lawyers, developing tools for diverse candidates to succeed, and creating pathways to leadership and equity positions.

Panelists:

Sara Scott, Center For Legal Inclusiveness

Phyllis Wan, Holland & Hart LLP

Jennifer Jaskolka, ModivCare

Much has been written about the problems associated with the billable hour business model. Numerous pundits have slammed it, demonized it, and blamed it for the profession’s ills. None of this criticism has had much effect. The billable hour is still the primary way many clients pay their lawyers—and how lawyers make their money. But sometimes lost in the discussion is the impact the billable hour model has on our collective psyche. Join our panel of experts as we address the effects of the billable hour our lawyer professionalism and ethics, lawyer mental health, and client and lawyer job satisfaction.

Panelists:

Lauren Lester, Lester Law

Mark Fogg, Childs McCune

Jonathan White, Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel

Can lawyers do better than scientists at persuading the public of the importance of climate change? We are not suggesting that lawyers should predict the impact of rising greenhouse gas emissions. That task will still fall to the scientists. But if a new approach to framing the issue is genuinely needed, how might lawyers make an effective contribution? Climate change is then a justice issue that demands lawyers’ immediate attention, not just a hypothetical problem for a distant future. International rules on emissions cuts, climate change finance and the attribution of responsibility are being decided today, which will have a huge impact on the lives of billions of people for decades to come. Join our panel of experts to discuss the role of lawyers in addressing this difficult problem for society and advocating for and creating policy to further climate change action.

Panelists:

Spencer Rubin, Bryan Cave

Michael Hiatt, EarthJustice

Kate Merlin, Colorado Environmental Advocates

Unintended Consequence of Hate

Author Katharine Kerr wrote “Hatred binds two people together even more tightly than love.”  When we “hate” something or someone, the strong physiological reaction alters our way of thinking, catapulting us into anger and rage.  In those emotional states, we can’t think clearly and we are not always able to control our behavior.  The bottom line?  Focusing on something we dislike or hate actually allows that which we hate to control us.  The next time you get upset to the point where you are ruminating about a person or a situation, remember not to allow them “to live rent free in your mind.”
