Canadians in Egypt

Danielle Letourneau's latest Video Blog where she talks about her Black ball experience, getting COVID after, and another Canadian player who went to train there. They discuss training, favorite foods, and experiences.

Jason Herring's experience from Egypt:
"The goal coming to Egypt was to prepare for the Canadian junior nationals and world junior championship that would've taken place in the summer but unfortunately, they were both postponed so now I'm focused on being the best I can be for the upcoming season.

We knew a few squash players that we became friends with from past junior tournaments and Brooke had a few squash friends from college that live in Cairo so it was nice having a few familiar faces to show us around and get used to the new surroundings.

We're staying in the capital of Egypt. It's an absolutely gigantic city with over 20 million people residing in the metro area so there's plenty of things to see and do. We're staying in a subsection of Cairo called Nasr City

Our practice usually starts around 10:30 in the morning and ends at 2-3 (with breaks in between). We then usually have a fitness session with a fitness coach before going to a junior drop-in for some practice games.

The level of players we've been hitting with has been very high. Most of the players we've been training with are members of the Egyptian junior national team which has really helped us improve our squash during our stay.

The culture here is a little chaotic, welcoming and very lively.

Why are Egyptians so good? After being here for a while there are a few things I noticed. The first would be the number of courts and players. Almost anywhere you go you'll find squash courts that are fully booked. The Egyptian Junior Nationals had draws of 256 from u11 to u17, In Canada, you'll only find draws of 16-64. The second thing I noticed was how many kids were playing. Kids start playing/training from around 7 years old compared to most countries where they start around 11-13 years old. I also got to watch the black ball open PSA tournament and noticed that nearly half of the crowd was made up of kids.

Both Brooke and I signed up to become members of the PSA pro circuit because there are many tournaments taking place here in Egypt. About once a month there is a PSA 5k tournament held, Brooke was able to enter one but I haven't been able to enter any because I have no PSA ranking points. Brooke had a very tough first match, her opponent was ranked top 5 for U19 girls in Egypt and she ended up losing 3-0 11-9 11-4 11-7."

Brooke Herring will be sending me her take on the experience for next month's Slice hopefully!
