Impossible Odds,

Incredible Numbers

On April 7, 2021 the Code Blue Overnight Emergency Warming Center closed its doors for the season after its sixth consecutive year of operations. Thanks to COVID-19, it was a season like no other. Capacity was cut in half to accommodate for social distancing, and new health and safety procedures were put in place to ensure the safety of our guests, staff, and volunteers.

Even with all of the challenges we faced, Ann’s Heart was able to fulfill our mission of providing a place of welcome and human services - thanks to our incredible donors, volunteers, staff, and community partners.

As in years past, guests were provided with a safe place to sleep, food, supplies, and access to shower and laundry facilities. New this year was the addition of on-site case management services, provided in partnership with fellow non-profit Open Hearth Inc

By working with several Chester County based services and nonprofit partners, and ensuring guests could access case management at the Code Blue Center during center hours, our ability to move individuals forward into longer-term shelter, permanent housing, or mental health/rehabilitation facilities was vastly improved.

Because of you - our donors, supporters, volunteers, staff, and community
- we were able to provide safe, warm space for anyone who walked through our doors.
This season at the Code Blue Center our incredible staff served a total of 50 individuals (8 women / 41 men)

Of the 50 served, eight were Seniors, ages 65 or older. Our partners at the Phoenixville Area Senior Center and Open Hearth Inc. helped us to ensure they were properly connected with the benefits and services they were eligible for due to their age.

Seven of our guests were US Military Veterans - the majority of which were struggling with chronic illness or mental health concerns. We are grateful to our partners at the Veterans Association for the support and partnership, helping us link these Vets to their available resources.

To put this total number of people served into perspective, a 'normal' season of the Code Blue Center served 60 - 70 individuals with a max capacity of 18 per night. This year's capacity was cut in half to 10 per night.
Opening its doors on November 16th for the 2020-21 season, the Code Blue Center was open 7 days a week, from 8AM to 8PM, for a total of 20 Weeks or 142 Days of consecutive programming.

Our dedicated Shift Managers worked as a team to ensure the Center was staffed during inclement weather, staff illnesses, holidays, and emergencies, keeping the Center open continuously for 24+ hours on 15 occasions

This is a HUGE undertaking, especially when facing the historic challenges of a global pandemic.

In the end, due to staff support, the hard work of our Open Hearth Case Manager, Sarah Davis, and collaboration of several of our partners, we were able to house 18 individuals in permanent or long-term shelter housing. And before we closed for the season, all remaining guests were placed in other shelters.

Beyond the numbers are names and faces

Every guest that walks through our doors is more than just a number. They are a person, a neighbor, a relationship, a lifetime of experiences that led them to us. Each season we meet the most incredible people, from all walks of life, who affect each of our staff members and volunteers so deeply that we carry them with us beyond the end of the season.

This season we were honored to be a part of a life-changing process for one of our guests who has been with us for several seasons. He has always been kind, helpful to other guests, and the first to offer a helping hand when needed. So this season when this gentleman was ready for a helpful hand in return, we couldn't have been more hopeful that this was the year that would make a difference in his life.

A Senior who had been chronically homeless for more than 10 years, he had been living outdoors without health insurance, any income, or a permanent spot to rest his head. Now, thanks to the hard work of our Case Manager Sarah from Open Hearth, the relationships built by our staff and volunteers, and Chester County resources, our guest is now housed in his own apartment, receiving medical benefits, receiving Social Security income, and beginning a new life in our community.

Many happy tears have been shed for this man who has become more than just someone we serve, but a member of our community - a friend. Sometimes the hardest part of this work is the waiting - knowing that sometimes you just have to open the door, offer the helping hand, and hope that one day it will make a difference. This season it finally did and we could not be happier!
