One Simple Kiss
By Sabrina York

Sold off in marriage to a wealthy lord to save her family from penury, now-widowed Lady Rose has no intention of marrying again. Why should she? She’s wealthy, free and, best of all, not required to attend to any man’s carnal needs. Not that she didn’t enjoy being married to Count Eddard de Vreis. Ed was a kind man, but the love she felt for him was hardly passionate. In fact, the thought of passion strikes her as ridiculous.

When Liam Mackinnon returns to England to discover that Rose—the woman by whom he has measured all others—is available, he is determined to win her. When she confides she has no interest in marriage, or the physical falderal that goes with it, he knows he can change her mind. If only he can convince her to give him one simple kiss.

Lily wasn’t in the house. Rose’s pulse elevated as she thought where Lily might have gone. Because she was fairly certain.
How aggravating that Rose hadn’t seen it coming, that she hadn’t guessed what her baby sister was up to. She’d known Lily her whole life. Whenever had Lily let someone else have the last word?
Oh, bother. None of that mattered. Not now. Not really. All that mattered was saving Lily from her own folly, before she was discovered at the ball, if it wasn’t already too late.
What time was the unmasking?
Blast. She had no idea.
She also had no idea how she could get into the Whitwell ball and hunt for her sister without being exposed herself.
And the other thing that baffled her? Why was it, when she thought of Liam—and that he could help her in this impossible task—her blood thickened into a warm slurry?
She lifted her skirts and took off at a run, popping her head into each room to see if he was there. She had no idea which room in the west wing was his, so she opened them all.
To no avail.
She pattered down the stairs to the first floor, and then the ground floor—he was nowhere to be found.
She found him, at long last, lounging in the billiard room.
“There you are,” she said with unintended irritation. “I need you.”
He blinked at her. “I beg your pardon?”
“It’s Lily. She’s gone.”
“Is she?”
“Incidentally, so is Daniel.”
For some reason, his lips kicked up.
“This is not funny, Liam. I know she’s gone to that damned ball.”
His smile became full-fledged. “Of course she sneaked out to the ball. She’s young. You would have too.”
She reared back. “I most certainly would not have.”
He quirked a brow. “Wouldn’t you?”
“Oh, bother. Just help me find her, will you? She’ll be ruined.”
He stilled. Studied her. A strange expression flickered across his too-handsome face. “All right, I will. But it will cost you.”
Her heart ker-thumped. “What?” She meant it as in, “What are you talking about?” but he read it as, “What will it cost?”
“A kiss.”
She shuddered at his response. It took a moment to recover. She crossed her arms. “Oh for pity sake. I kissed you yesterday.”
His eyes widened and he barked a laugh. “That was hardly a kiss.”
“It most certainly was.”
“Not the kind I wanted.” His eyes narrowed and he whispered, “I want to taste you.”
Taste you.
Heat lashed her.
“Just one kiss. So I can show you once and for all what you’re missing.”
“I’m not missing anything. I—”
He leaned back on his billiard cue. “Do you want my help?”
“Yes.”
“Then a kiss is the price.”
She made disgruntled noises for a minute, but said, “Fine,” in a snippy tone.
“Ah-ah-ah,” he said. “Allow me to clarify. This will be my kind of kiss—that means wherever I want, whenever I want, for as long as I want.”
“I said fine,” she snapped.
Still, he made her shake on it.
