This month, Nick Clegg denied Facebook had a polarising effect on politics just as a whistleblower confirmed how it was manipulating world affairs. Three big platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Clubhouse) all played down massive data breaches. And Amazon tried to defend its tax position in a bizarre Twitter strategy. With big tech behaving badly, it was nice to spend time at a Californian “unconference” and remember that idealistic, value-driven people still run a chunk of the internet.
