2021 Newsletter Term 2, Week 3

Parkes Christian School

A Message from the Primary Coordinator

One School.

Most of my teaching has been in Sydney schools; within these schools a clear distinction was formed between the Infants department and the Primary department or the Primary School and the High School. PCS is one school from Kindergarten to Year 12. One playground. One teaching staff. One student body. This term, it has been clearly on display from the staff working on the upcoming musical, disco night, SRC...

Primary Expo - Please Join Us!
Our Kindergarten and Primary Expo is on Tuesday 4th May at 6pm in the school hall and we invite any families interested in enrolling their child in 2022 to join us.
We would also like to encourage our current infants and primary students, along with their parents to attend the evening as well.
There will be plenty of fun and interactive activities for both young and old to participate in on the night, along with a free sausage sizzle.
We hope to see you there at our Expo!
Getting Active
Kindergarten and Year 1 have been busy getting ready for the Athletics Carnival games. Some of the games they have been practising are tunnel ball, turbo javelin, balancing games, relays, jumping and running practise. They are all looking forward to a fun day at Northparkes Oval on Friday 7 May.
Life Education Van
This week our Primary Students have spent time in the Life Education Van. Overall students have been learning about how to keep themselves safe and healthy. These specialized interactive lessons have given students the opportunity to explore various health topics linked to the curriculum. Topics such as personal hygiene, good nutrition, reasons for physical exercise, safety, positive relationships, the functions of the human body, the use of medications and the effect of smoking, alcohol and drugs. Students enjoyed participating in discussions, group work and activities such as puzzles and role plays. The students all received take home booklets on their set topic to remind them of what they have learnt.
Year 11 Biology
Year 11 Biology had a great start to their Year 11 studies. Students developed their skills in the areas such as using senior microscopes, preparing slides, taking photos through a microscope lens. Students sharpened their research and first-hand investigation skills with their individual depth studies.
For concepts that are difficult to see as they are on a micro-scale, the students made models. These included the cell membrane as well as some parts of cells. We examined evidence from the past and linked the evidence to differences in the plants and animals that lived long ago. Did you know that Australia once had wombat like creatures as large as a VW Beetle? It was the Diprotodon and the largest marsupial to ever exist.
The Biology students have started their studies in Year 12 Biology. In this course, students will complete work into the reproductive strategies of plants, how certain traits are passed onto the next generation, diseases and genetic changes.  It is going to be a great time of increasing our knowledge and skills in Biology.
Senior Business Studies
The road to the HSC has begun for Senior Business Studies. Having started the HSC content this term students have had their eyes opened to the importance of learning study skills to assist them in understanding the course content. Business Studies has a lot of dot points to remember in four key areas including Operations, Marketing, Finance and Human Resources. As students look at case studies of real businesses and what they do to be successful they are also engaged in memorising content to answer exam questions. A few strategies we have tried include a syllabus jigsaw, flash cards, note taking and a new game called the Unfair Game where students are split into teams and answer questions to receive unknown points for their team. When they correctly answer the questions they can choose to keep the points or give the points away. This is where it gets unfair - students may be giving away 10 points or keeping -60 points for themselves. It's a tough game but we have found it fun and a helpful way to study! Hopefully it works to help these students remember everything they need for the HSC exams!
Anzac Day March
Thank you to all our students, staff and parents that joined us last Sunday in the Anzac Day March.
We marched in remembrance of the sacrifice others have made for our country. They will be remembered.
Lest we forget.
Welcome Paul

Be sure to say hi when you spot Paul around the school grounds.
PCS Staff
Name: Lisa Gillow.
Your Role at School: Principals PA, Administration and First Aid Officer.
Favourite School Memory: Watching Glen's reaction when I mispronounce words/names etc.
Fun Fact: My son is already 1/3 of my height and he's only 9 months old.
The Best Thing about Working at PCS: The staff and the family like environment.
Favourite Quote/Verse: "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" Philippians 4:13.
Name: Suliana Naqau.
Your Role at School: Year 4 Teacher and Teaching Stage 2 in Geography and Bible Study.

Favourite School Memory: Learning my times tables in Year 5 in primary school! Our primary teacher (a mathematician who believes in the power of times tables to effectively solve maths problems) would send us outside to learn our times tables. I literally crammed the times tables from 2 - 12 not because of maths but because I was scared of my parents - my dad was the principal and my mum was an infants teacher. I was scared that they would stop me from playing primary netball on Saturday. That times tables has stayed with me from primary up until now!
Fun Fact:
1. I never wanted to be a teacher - I was told by my parents that teaching is the best job so I took it up just to please my parents and THAT WAS THE SECOND BEST DECISION THAT I MADE! My first BEST was making Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. 2. I used to think that Eve was the most stupidest woman because she had a conversation with a snake!!
3. I cannot stand complainers or negative people!

The Best Thing about Working at PCS: Everything! The atmosphere and the people here are just so amazing - the staff and the students and their families! I believe that we have been brought together into this place as such a time as this!! I love PCS! This is my second home!
Favourite Quote/Verse: Genesis 18:14 - Is there anything that is too hard for the Lord?
NCCD
Parkes Christian School participates in the National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD). The NCCD is an annual collection of information about Australian school students who are receiving adjustments due to a disability. The NCCD enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with a disability and how they can be best supported at school.
