JAMES ST CULTURAL PRECINCT

What’s your vision for the James Street Cultural Precinct?

The area is proposed to be a hub for Esperance culture, tourism & history – but we need your ideas to ensure we get it right.
Community Focused
Tourism in Mind
Connected to Identity

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This Project aims to enhance the James Street experience for the community and visitors and to identify opportunities to make the precinct economically sustainable and active. The Shire undertook initial consultation in September 2020 and an summary on the feedback is available here.

From the community consultation a series of guiding principles were formed: A Taste of Esperance, A Home for All, Culture Club, Holiday Place and Coastal Life

From here, three scenarios are envisioned for the James Street Cultural Precinct:
  • The Garden Collective
  • The Super Village
  • The Heritage Spine
The catalyst for undertaking this work is the current need to consider a renewal of the Esperance Public Library. Additionally it could address a proposal Council received in 2019 to consider relocating the Esperance Visitor Centre to a location in closer proximity to the Esperance Museum.

The potential of the James Street area was first identified in the Town Centre Revitalisation Masterplan, finalised in 2015. Since then a number of Shire projects relating to the Masterplan have been undertaken, including the Parking Strategy and a CBD Landscaping Plan that has started to be rolled out within the Esperance CBD area. The James Street Cultural Precinct Plan is the Shire's next project to build upon the Masterplan.
