Lockdown?! Sure, why not!

It’s been years since the Nova Scotian band Joel Plaskett Emergency asked, “Can I go nowhere with you?” Seems like a perfect theme song for a lockdown and we can all sing along during another summer of staycationing...hopefully with our whole Atlantic Bubble.

So, what can staycationing look like in our area this coming summer?

Well, how about glamping? Yes, we have a year-round glamping site under development by Port Wade Glamping Domes! Drew and Dana are hoping for a June opening so that people can enjoy some dome glamping in our beautiful area. They’ll be offering unique overnight four-season vacation accommodation in a modern geodesic dome, designed with an up-scaled interior featuring all the comforts of home. A large panoramic bay window provides a view of the Annapolis Basin from across the road, and there’s a skylight as well, for staring at the stars at night.

The dome, an ancient building design and a first of its kind for vacationers in our area, provides a unique experience for any tourist to enjoy. And with close proximity to Annapolis Royal, staycationers will be able to enjoy all that our area offers. You can follow Drew and Dana’s progress on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/PortWadeGlampingDomes.

Doesn’t lockdown mean shutdown?

No, it doesn’t mean an entire shutdown.

Of course, there are essential services still operating, BUT, there are also non-essential businesses that are still operating as well - they just can’t be open to the public – which makes your support critical. These local businesses are still taking online orders or making sales over the phone. They’re offering shipping, contactless delivery, or curbside pickup. You just can’t visit their shops in person.

HOMEBODY Décor, Apparel, and Vintage, a new shop in Annapolis Royal, has some of its featured stock available for sale via Etsy. HOMEBODY is also able to make sales through posts on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/homebodyannapolis.

Existing shops like The Chocolate Shop & Café may not be open for café visitors, but you can still order JoAnn’s chocolate and do a curbside pickup! If you’re looking for reading materials, you can even send her a message with the name of your favourite author, and she’ll let you know what she has available. Just visit her Facebook page for details, https://www.facebook.com/The-Chocolate-Shop-Cafe-137152739690008.

Those shops also have some great options for Mother’s Day.  The Chocolate Shop has partnered with The Flower Girl Blooms & Baskets for a special offer of flowers and chocolates for Mom. If we must celebrate Mother’s Day in lockdown, it may as well be with flowers and chocolate but...

It could also be with a fully prepared meal for six to go! The Station in Bridgetown has had to close its doors and go strictly take-out only, but that hasn’t deterred the team from making your Mother’s Day a memorable one. Visit Facebook for menu details and ordering instructions, https://www.facebook.com/thestationbridgetown/posts/288601192957479.

And, last but not least, Founders House Dining & Drinks has also revised its Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner service into a take-out model. Reach out to them for more details.

So there you have it – the brightest side of a lockdown that we could find!

Let’s get ready to go nowhere with each other this spring and look to our local community for activities, accommodations, shopping and dining.

Enjoy the song Nowhere With You by Joel Plaskett Emergency!
And, you’re welcome for putting that cheerful earworm of a song in your head! The best way to get rid of it is to sing it to someone else...preferably out of doors from more than six feet away and while wearing a mask.

Or do it over Zoom!
