Making Waves Together

Lynher's first day out this year under sail came on Friday, April 9th and what a brilliant day it was in all respects. The warm sun shone through, the breeze was light and the sea was calm. It was Making Waves Together Day! We love these days with the Making Waves families. They are very special to us and introduce, not only Lynher to them but the fun and joy of the simple things in life. Just watching their faces as they climb aboard and how soon they come out of their shells and join in, pulling ropes and helping us to hoist or put away the sails. As you can see in the pictures even the quietest member of the family can't help but find their voice and renewed optimism. They leave us with a rejuvenated spirit too. These days create unbreakable bonds in underprivileged families that are going through life's hard times and they give them much needed respite from their daily cares and troubles. Lynher is entertaining nine wonderful families in this way in April and we can't wait to share her with them all.

As you can see from the pictures the gorgeous family had a ball and certainly made some amazing memories. Together on the water and the fun later at the BBQ on Barnpool beach.

We are excited to report even more brand new ideas happening at Lynher HQ. We are proud to announce the acquisition of a second hand Industrial Sewing Machine. The plan is to create recycled Lynher merchandise out of off-cuts from old sails and pieces of canvas. We would dearly like to thank Sarah of Ocean Canvas at Richmond Walk for the off-cuts of canvas and various bits of zipping. Also we thank her for her kind donation of our first two cobs of marine grade sewing thread that has got us started. Watch this space for more news on the various canvas and sail creations as they develop into all manner of bags and cushions for sale. All the items made will be displayed in the shop area of our Gymnasium reception and will be awaiting to be found, bought and loved by their new owners. They can also make gorgeous gifts for a lucky family member or friend. All the profits will also be recycled - back into Lynher for her upkeep. As the pictures show, the first thing created, whilst also practising our design and sewing skills on the machine, was our homage to Lynher all in canvas. I wonder what we shall add that to - a bag or a cushion cover or perhaps frame it as a work of art!

We were overjoyed to discover that we had been very fortunate to be awarded £13,900 in the second round of the Government's Cultural Recovery Fund. This award will support Lynher's plans for reopening this Springtime and have already been put towards providing a safe platform to board Lynher when she is at her mooring at Southdown Marina. Phoning around we we delighted to find two pontoons for sale at Turnchapel. Even better the Plymouth Cattewater Council Team agreed to tow them around and all the way to Southdown where they are now secured. In the pictures you see the two pontoons on the journey past the Naval Dockyard's South Yard and Captain Dom and Barbara in the dinghy looking out for their arrival to guide them into place. They all had to go past Lynher sitting pretty on her second mooring just off Mashfords. This is yet another first for Lynher as when she is moored out there she can be easily reached from our Shorebase Gymnasium and she doesn't have to wait for the tide to start her day from there. As you can see Lynher is not the only one taking a rest on the new mooring!
