PPDC Embarks On Community Engagement In Anambra

The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) who emerged winner of the prestigious One Awards in 2020 has begun activities geared towards finding solutions to address government deficits and improve the social welfare of communities. Based on this PPDC engaged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), The Government, and Members of two communities in Anambra state (Okija and Achalla

Our aim was to strengthen the capacity of the local communities and build knowledge around civic rights and responsibilities; including that of the under-represented communities consisting of women, disabled and the elderly people on what governance and contract delivery means and the value it adds to their lives.

During the engagement, PPDC focused on sharpening advocacy and dialogue skills of local CSOs and building their capacity to understand and use civic-tech platforms for contract analysis and investigation, reporting and advocacy for system improvement. We also engaged the government on improving disclosure practices through open contracting and encouraged them to include more contractual data on priority sectors like health and education on the Anambra State Open Contracting Portal

Synopsis Of 2020 National FOI Ranking

The Freedom of Information Act, 2011 is the bedrock of PPDCs work because it provides information about projects delivered in local communities and enables us to track the projects to ensure value for money and citizens satisfaction.

This is why every year, we rank Ministries Departments and Agencies based on their level of compliance to the Freedom Of Information Act 2011 (FOIA) and award the most compliant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to motivate them to proactively disclose public information.

To evaluate the results of the 2020 National FOI  Ranking, we have provided an analysis grouping the responsive, fully  responsive and non responsive MDAs.

NOA Trains State Directors, FOIA Desk Officers On Understanding And Effective Application Of The FOIA, 2011

In a bid to promote the utility of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)2011 which is  necessary for open governance, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) organized a capacity building training for State Directors and FOIA Desk Officers.

The hybrid (virtual) training was joined by NOA State Directors virtually, some physical participants and a representative from the Public and Private Development Centre.

During the training, Participants were schooled on the practicability of the law and lectured on circumstances to seek information as well as limits to requests for information as contained in FOIA, 2011. The representative of the DG, NOA urged state directors to cascade the training to NOA Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers (COMOs) domiciled in 774 Local Government Areas and Area Councils of the FCT in an effort to deepen understanding of the FOIA.

Open Contracting Capacity Building For ASUBEB

PPDC has been supporting the Anambra state government to promote transparency, accountability, and public engagement through several activities, one of which is the deployment of an open contracting system.

To further this support and ensure the availability of data on education projects, PPDC is also partnering with the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to deploy an open contracting portal for publishing data. Based on this, we held a one-day capacity building for departments of the ASUBEB on the use of open contracting data and the utility of their open contracting platform.
