Black People Mostly Likely to be
Negatively Impacted by Prop B

Prop B is what 21st Century racism looks like. Did you know that Black people make up nearly 40% of Austin’s homeless population? Making someone a criminal for not having a place to live is heartless and immoral. It is also a failed policy.

Amid a global pandemic, unemployment rates continue to rise for Black people, and with skyrocketing housing costs more people are finding it harder to make ends meet.

And while we fully recognize the need for better solutions and more resources made available to shelter the unhoused, punishing people for being poor is not the solution. A small, but financially equipped, group of people want to give police the green light to jail someone because they don’t have a place to live. Instead of providing housing, their answer is a jail cell.

The Black Leaders Collective urges you to consider these facts:
  • Nearly 2,200 people experience homelessness in Austin every day.
  • There are approximately 1,100 shelter beds available in Austin, leaving the other 1,100 out on the streets.
  • Roughly a quarter of all people experiencing homelessness in Texas are employed, but unable to afford shelter.
Vote No against Prop B. Prop B is anti-Black.
