Have a Wonderful Summer

This will be our last department newsletter for the Fall 2020 - Spring 2021 academic year as we take a break for the summer. The newsletter will begin again on August 27, 2021. Fall Semester will begin on August. 30. We hope that you all have a wonderful summer.

Welcome New SGE Members and New SGE Advisor

Welcome to Our Newest Members:
Ian Weech (AEG); Dr. Ryan Frazier (Faculty Associate Member); and Dr. Caty Tems (Faculty Associate Member). Everyone -- please welcome these new members to our chapter.

SGE would also like to welcome our new faculty advisor Dr. Ryan Frazier. Dr. Frazier will take Dr. Ford's Place as faculty advisor as Dr. Ford is retiring this summer.

SGE would like to thank Dr. Ford for everything that he has done for our chapter. He founded our SGE chapter in 1998 and has acted as the advisor since that time. Under Dr. Ford's guidance, our SGE chapter has received multiple national awards. Thank you Dr. Ford for the guidance you have given all of our members and everything that you have done to make our chapter so successful.

SGE National Convention

SGE held its 45th Biennial Convention this past Saturday (April 10) on Zoom, and it came off very smoothly. Kylie Arcaris served as our official voting delegate and Judy Smith was the alternate. Both Judy and Kylie did a great job in preparing a written chapter report (Judy) and preparing & delivering a PowerPoint presentation (Kylie) to the whole convention. Thank you, Kylie and Judy. You did a great job representing our chapter. The 46th Biennial Convention will be hosted by the Eta Alpha Chapter (University of Tennessee at Martin) in September 2022, with a field trip to an incredible fossil locality related to the Cretaceous Seaway.

Virtual Geology: Inclusive Field Course Development in the Age of Corona

Dr. Liz Balgord will be presenting for the Women in Mining Arizona (WIM AZ) May Dig In: Lunch and Learn series on May 5. Dr. Balgord will be talking about the development and use of multiple interactive virtual field trips for both introductory and upper-level geoscience courses. The virtual trips were conceived and developed in response to remote learning requirements during COVID, but will continue to allow greater accessibility to students and act as a resource for folks who can't visit Utah's world-class field sites in person.

When: May 5 at 12 pm, MST.
