Outdoor minor soccer

Edmonton Minor Soccer is working to organize a safe and fun 2021 Outdoor Season, in accordance with Government recommendations. The goal is to have a season in the summer months. Exact timing for the season is yet to be determined.

Registration is currently open. Information on playing, coaching and refereeing can be found at EMSA and EMSA Southeast.

Can you help us operate soccer in Bonnie Doon? We are down a few volunteers. Some paint the lines or pack equipment bags, others help the coach, etc. If you can help or have questions, please write to Ian at programs@bonniedoon.ca.

AGM notes

Thank you to the 24 Bonnie Dooners who "zoomed in" to attend our 2021 AGM. They voted in Duane Gingras, Daniel Kaliel and Mark Gordon for another two year term as, respectively, President, Treasurer and Social Chair. Halfway through their two-year terms are Ellen Sitler, Karen Doucet, Ian Gray and Bill McMillan as VP, Secretary, Programs Chair and Civics Chair.

While programs & events were much reduced in the past year, we noted our Santagrams were a big success. And our volunteers made the best ice in Edmonton (this is just a fact, isn't it?!). We're grateful that Stephanie Wold was able to run our casino soon before the pandemic began.

A mighty wind (meets roof)

Volunteers Dan Haley & Pierre Moquin patched our hall roof, replacing shingles blown away by a storm. They reported back the roof is in rough shape and that we should reshingle it. (Oddly, they found no tar paper under the shingles.)

Outdoor pickleball

Karen is organizing weekly pickleball sessions again in 2021, played outdoors at Dermott District Park. Two cohort members at each side of the net, playing with their own racquets. More...

Heads up, bicylists!

June is Bike Month, and to celebrate, Ritchie Community League has set up a friendly competition with other leagues across the city to see which neighbourhood cycles the most. Bonnie Doon did well last June. Let's get healthy and get competitive! Details...

After distinguished service

We thank these Bonnie Doon volunteers who recently moved on to other passion projects:
  • Stacey Drysdale, who breathed life into our hall rental efforts, raising much of the revenue required to run the league's programs for ten years.
  • Nicola Tupas, for years of editing these newsletters. Nicola is a born community builder who seems to know everything that's going on in Bonnie Doon!
  • Colin Hansen, who managed soccer in Bonnie Doon, through boom years of expanding interest and the challenging past pandemic year.

Bloom! 🌺

Edmonton’s Front Yards in Bloom (FYiB) program is set to run again in 2021. FYiB celebrates the efforts people put into making their front yards beautiful. Here's a great way to get some exercise and meet your neighbours!

Bonnie Doon’s participation rests with a hardy group of volunteers who walk to all corners of our neighbourhood, ensuring that no garden goes unnoticed. As with last year, we will keep our teams within their bubbles or socially distant as we walk and take notes.

If you’re interested in gardens, walking, meeting new or old friends, or in seeing your neighbourhood with fresh eyes, please contact Karen, karenlizdoucet@gmail.com. Thank you!

Karen offers more information on the FYiB program on our website.

Congratulations to Angie & Mike [below] at 9315 93 Street who won First Place for their "Edible Yard" in 2020!

Like words much?

We are looking for a volunteer to write these monthly newsletters. This is a good way to become involved in your neighbourhood, and enforce your views on issues like the Oxford comma, trailing prepositions and the like. 😎

Reply to this email if you want to learn more and perhaps try a bit of "comms" work for your community.

Beautiful Mill Creek Ravine

Please help remove trash from the ravine. We have some cleanup kits remaining, provided by the city. The kits don't have the funky remote pincer tools but do have gloves and plastic bags of several sizes. In coordination with neighbouring communities, Bonnie Doon is looking after the area north of Whyte Ave and east of the creek. More...

Memories recovered!

Our history book, Memories of Bonnie Doon, is not sold out after all! Spring cleanup revealed one last box. More than 100 personal stories that, together, tell the story of Bonnie Doon. Learn more...

Lighting our way

The pandemic severely restricts what we can do together. In December, several Bonnie Dooners lighted our way. Darrell Muth, Tracy Apoll & Ian Gray and Ivan & Judy Chin lighted Advent Fires in their front yards. Others followed their example for four Sundays [map].

If you have pandemic-friendly ways for us to come together safely outdoors, please reply to this email.

If you have an idea for a program we could offer, please consider the support offered by Metro Community Education. We're hear to listen!

A grate danger

Vandals have been removing dozens of drainage grates from roads in the greater Bonnie Doon area. Be careful out there! For more details and what to do if you discover a missing grate, read our blog post.

The café story

COVID-19 has been unkind to local coffee shops. The Columbian opened in mid April but soon closed when a team member tested positive. Their Grand Opening (Take 2) was May 1st. A member of Café Bicyclette's staff experienced the same problem. They had hoped to open their patio in early May but M. Cournoyer tells us they have elected to stay closed till the COVID numbers improve. Meanwhile, Green Ash Café is doing well.

Help us prosper

We make our neighbourhood stronger when we Buy Local. We keep a list of small (sometimes tiny!) businesses in Bonnie Doon, from babysitters to lawyers, from therapists to window cleaners, plus much more. Check out The List.

If your skill earns you some cash on the side or you run your own full-time business and want to be listed, reply to this email. We'd especially love to have someone with expertise in any of carpentry, electrical and plumbing. You must live in Bonnie Doon or your business must be located here.

Large increase in Holyrood development

Regency Development has applied for a 37% increase in the number of residences in their already huge development project in Holyrood. Some residents in the area were already concerned about the increased load on local infrastructure. This will be covered in a City Council Public Hearing, Tuesday, May 4, from 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM. You can attend virtually. Details...
