Second Reading: 1 John 4:7-21
We love God and others because God first loved us. We cannot say we love God, whom we have not seen, while hating fellow Christians, whom we regularly see. Love toward God is to be matched by love toward others because the essence of God is love.

Church News and Notes
With the clarity and depth characteristic of the classics, this spiritual bestseller lays out a perceptive and insightful plan for living a spiritual life and achieving the ultimate goal of that life — union with God. Nouwen views our spiritual “ascent” as evolving in three movements.

Books are available at Thriftbooks.com, and at Amazon.com to name just a couple.

Southwest California Assembly
June 4-5, 2021
This year, the Southwest California Synod Assembly meeting will be conducted completely virtually. All attendees will join from the comfort of their own home or office to conduct the usual business and voting, including voting for our next Bishop.

Speaking of voting, two delegates—one male, one female—represent Mt. Carmel at the assembly. Marshall Pihl is our male delegate this year.

We are looking for a female delegate to attend both days of the virtual meeting. Please contact Marshall by May 7th if you are interested in attending online. A delegate must be a member of Mt. Carmel and must attend both days.
Please contact Marshall Pihl before May 11 if you are interested in being part of the committee to call our next pastor. Here’s the process for forming the committee:
  •  The executive committee will review all names at their May 11 meeting and develop a prospective list that represents who we are and where we need go.
  • Council will review the list at their May 20 meeting and develop a list for recommendation to the congregation.
  • The congregation will review the proposed list and elect the final call committee at the June 13 congregational meeting.
Don’t delay, contact Marshall today!

June 13, 2021
It’s time once again for the Mt. Carmel Annual Business Meeting. We have a date, but the time and method (online or in-person) has not been determined. Please watch the Vistas for more information as the church council considers the available options.

How much risk does Covid-19 pose for you? Find out using the easy-to-use tool at:

This tool synthesizes reported COVID-19 geographic case data and rapidly evolving scientific research to help you ballpark how much risk this disease poses to you. You don't need to sign-in, sign-up to use the calculator.
Join the movement and help spread the word!

We need your help in spreading the facts and benefits about COVID-19 vaccines. Let's get our community one step closer to immunity.

Here are 5 easy things you can do right now to help us share the facts:
  1. Sign up for the Vaccine Champions newsletter.
  2. Share one of our ready-to-go social media posts about the vaccine.
  3. Get the facts on our Frequently Asked Questions page.
  4. Add a #VaccineChampion photo frame to your Facebook profile picture.
  5. Post a photo of yourself smiling, flexing your vaccine arm, or showing off your "I got vaccinated!" sticker, and tell us about your vaccine experience-- don't forget to hashtag #VaccineChampion!
Read the full news release here, and sign up to be a Vaccine Champion by visiting www.RecoverSLO.org/VaccineChampion
Protect Your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card
Your vaccination record card has personal information that can put you at risk for identity theft. Make sure you protect your card and identity with these tips:

✔️ Do: Snap a picture of the card in case it gets lost or misplaced.
❌ Don't: Share a photo of your card online. Take a picture of your vaccine sticker or bandage instead.
✔️ Do: Keep your card stored in a safe place at home.
❌ Don't: Laminate your card. The heat may damage the card or cause the ink to be illegible.

Anyone who loses their vaccination record card should not print a fake one at home or buy a fake vaccination record card, as it is
against the law. Instead, request a new one by calling the County’s Phone Assistance Center at (805) 543-2444. Read the full news release here.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Volunteers from Mt. Carmel prepare and serve a hot lunch for The People's Kitchen program at 40 Prado on the first Friday of each month. Here is a list of our volunteers for Friday, May 7:

Entree - Nancy Cook; Dianne Draze; Betty Johnson; Judy Kirkhart; Annette Martin; Laurie Musiel; Karen Petersen; Nancy Priddy
Salad - Cheryl Garnsey; J Remington; Carol Winger
Canned Fruit - Marueen Dresp; Ingrid Frokjer
Milk - Ro Cannon-Miller

Please contact Jan Uder, or the church office at info@mtcarmelslo.org if you are unable to serve this month, or if you would like information on volunteering in the future.
Our next food drive for Iglesia Santa Cruz will be on Saturday, May 8. Every bag of rice or beans, every package of Masa or sugar helps families that are stuggling to keep food on the table. Donations may also be left in the shopping cart near Quist Hall on Sundays at the in-person worship service.

In April we were delivered over 1,000 pounds of food and $250 in gift cards. We also delivered some left over jars of soup mix. They were very popular! The pictures below show a few of the families who received some of the food that day.
Chili Feed for The Front Porch

In case you haven’t heard, the Presbyterian church has a free coffee house, The Front Porch, located at the end of Foothill literally on the property line with Cal Poly. The Front Porch, through the support of community groups, offers a free “to go” dinner on Wednesdays.

Our next service opportunity is on Wednesday, May 12. We make chili, coleslaw and muffins, package it up in quantities to serve 4, and deliver 20 bags to FP.

We’ll meet at church at 10 a.m., and we’ll be done by 2 p.m. Some of the tasks can be done at home. We mask, we distance, we keep the window cracked for cross ventilation, and we have a good time gabbing.

To help out, call or text Patti Frey at 805-235-1938. Thanks.

Matching Gifts Challenge Benefitting the SLO County Food Bank

The new donation site is up and running. Please click the link below for more information.

Link to Mt. Carmel matching funds page

If you prefer to donate to the matching funds challenge by check, make your check out to the SLO County Food Bank. Write Mt. Carmel Matching Funds Drive on the memo line so that your donation will be properly credited.  Mail to:

Food Bank Coalition of SLO County
1180 Kendall Road
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

Please do not route your food bank donations through Mount Carmel.  Doing so will delay your donation and make tracking the matching funds challenge donations difficult for the food bank.

Thank you to Mount Carmel for your always generous spirit!
