“What I want young women and girls to know is: You are powerful and your voice matters. You’re going to walk into many rooms where you may be the only one who looks like you or who has had the experiences you’ve had. So you use that voice and be strong.” — Kamala Harris, Vice President

Yesterday in New York, it was 83 degrees, so surreal. The month of April went by very quickly and for me some many really important things happened for us:
  • Our first exhibition went well and is getting lots of traffic. It is still up until May 16, so come and see it.
  • We began a collaboration with the Fine Arts and Performing Arts Department at Bowie State University. They are looking for US based companies who can offer internships for their students, please reach out and I will be able to put you in touch with the chair. It is an immediate need: They are looking for: film, fashion, animation, design and social media opportunities.
  • CALABAR GALLERY OUTPOST in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
  • Our ArtTalk Series on Facebook Live is now viewed by 2000 people a week - we will take a week off to plan the next stage and relaunch again in 2 weeks.
  • SUPPORTING THE ART ECOSYSTEM: We expanded our circle by supporting younger women and their organizations by being intentionally in working with them, sharing what they do and been the "Big Sister" if they need advice. Lagos Art Shows by Princess Uzo will be opening a gallery in Lagos soon. We are so delighted to give her advice about the gallery business - and what she should prepare for. It's the same work we did with Akwaaba Gallery in Newark when it opened and Knowhere Art in Martha's Vineyard. We are intentional of supporting Black Women build galleries. We collaborated with Alpha Arts Alliance last year and have continued to be an advisor and mentor to assist Iram Sadaf reach her goals of curating and coaching to artists. And this month, we met with Stapledon Arts to give advice and help expand their mission of filling the void in art and art education by sharing quality art content focused on artist (educators) of color. So please go to Instagram and like these organizations.
  • Please head to Martha's Vineyard this summer to see: Knowhere Art is proud to present COLLIDE & SCOPE, a group exhibition launching the opening of their third season featuring painting, installation, sculpture and mixed media work from seven BIPOC artists; Anina Major (she/her), Anoushka Mirchandani (she/her), Jaleeca Yancy (she/her), Lerone Wilson (he/him), Rain Spann (he/him), Tana Torrent (she/her) and Zahyr Lauren (they/them). Visit https://knowhereart.com/pages/collide-scope learn about the artists.
  • GALLERY COLLABORATIONS: We will be working with two galleries this year, one in London and the other in Capetown to sell work and promote artists in each other's territory. We will like to add galleries in West Africa, Europe and Asia by the end of the year. These collaborations are ways of working in the midst of covid-19 and .

“My struggle to continue painting is just a form of resistance, a resistance which at its root is grounding, naïve and primitive. I have but dreams, dreams that no other has used. Those are the gardens of my paintings. Hungry for exposure, for nudity lavishing in the wait of the insane.” - HUSSEIN SALIM

We are offering these pieces to be sold as well as some others, and you can contact us via this email - info@calabargallery.com

HUSSEIN SALIM

As a result of a tumultuous political and economical period in Sudan, which too brought about disputes of its historical context, Hussein Salim spent a number of years as a refugee in various countries such as Egypt and South Africa. Despite his artistic training in Khartoum University, he attained his Master’s degree in art at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Pietermaritzburg. He has exhibited extensively overseas along with acclaimed local galleries, such as Johans Borman and Bonisa Private Gallery. It was during this time, that Salim and his family embarked on both an emotional and awakening return back to his homeland, Sudan. Inspired by its diversity and diasporic, multicultural communal structure, his body of work aims to celebrate this through extensive layering of symbols masked by rich colors. Following the example of graciousness, humility and resilience of the Sudanese, Hussain Salim has worked closely with NGO’s such as African Angels and Buccaneers Outreach program, whom focus on the sustenance and uplifting of children and schools in marginalized communities with proceeds of his artwork sales being donated to various outreach schemes. He is represented by Eclectica Contemporary in Cape Town, South Africa.
