May 2021

From Cathy's Desk
Happy May Day!  We are so privileged to live in a community surrounded by natural wonders including beautiful flowering agricultural wonders.  The peach blossoms, magnolias, and spring flowers have really lifted my spirits and I hope they’ve lifted yours too.  If the blossoms and spring weather aren’t doing it for you, we have many uplifting new titles and programs this May.
Betty Knight is back May 5 to teach you everything you need to know about native and invasive plants.  Her last gardening seminar was “sold out” so register now for this free program to avoid disappointment.  If you prefer indoor projects, can get creative with Kasia on May 25 when blossoms are the theme of this month’s Cocktails and Creativity.  Sip a drink while learning fun techniques to paint blossoming trees.
We’re proud to host two virtual author talks this month.  Award-winning journalist Denise Davy discusses her new book “Her Name Was Margaret: Life and Death on the Streets”, on May 10.  This book is a thoroughly researched and compassionate look at the life of a woman abandoned by society and offers hope with details of programs that have successfully reduced homelessness in several cities.
Andrea Bennett’s “Like a Boy But Not a Boy: Navigating Life, Mental Health and Parenthood Outside the Gender Binary” is one of CBC’s top nonfiction picks this year.  On May 26, Andrea discusses her collection of insightful and sometimes humorous essays that delve into themes of mortality, creativity, mental health, class, and bike mechanics.  As she recounts, “you can learn a lot about yourself by trueing a wheel”.
The Fireside Reads Book Club returns May 19 when Debbie and Sarah lead a discussion of Michael Leviton’s memoir “To Be Honest”.  A New York City-based photographer, writer, and musician, Michael was raised to never tell a lie by his parents.  Read the e-book or hard copy version of his “family’s tragic love affair with truth-telling” and join in a discussion about how it all worked out.  Keep reading for details about this month’s InfoHealth and all the great new titles.
