GIM Proud
We already know we have the best Palliative Care program in the country, and it has been proven again. The Joint Commission surveyed Palliative Care last month. The survey was a huge success with no deficiencies, which in itself is a remarkable conclusion. But it did not stop there. The surveyor went on to say this was the most amazing palliative program she has ever seen. She specifically noted the creative innovations and quality initiatives of the program. Congratulations and well done, Palliative Care Team!
Congratulations to Dr. Elena Lebduska for being selected for one of the 2021 Department of Medicine Rising Star Awards. Dr. Lebduska was recognized for her work as a highly-regarded preceptor in resident clinic, the resident QI lead, a member of the APP fellowship, the director if the Internal Medicine content for the LIC, for her role in developing the interdisciplinary ambulatory care conference for the DOM, and developing a GIM M&M. What a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding and high-impact work.
Earlier this month, Dr. Tyra Fainstad presented her work on clinician burnout to U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy at a National Academy of Medicine Listening Roundtable session on clinician wellness. Dr. Fainstad's presentation highlighted the innovative solution she has been developing with her colleague Dr. Adrienne Mann, Better Together. Better Together is a six month, online life coaching program that includes webinars, workshops, 24/7 coaching, and two live group coaching calls each week. Drs. Fainstad and Mann currently have over 100 women CU resident physicians enrolled in the program and are studying it in a randomized controlled trial. The latest U.S. News & World Report annual Best Medical School rankings are out, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine ranked #6 in primary care and #22 in internal medicine! While we all know our outstanding clinician-educators are not in it for the fame, it is a little nice when our work receives national recognition. In addition, the SOM ranked #27 in research! You can find the CU Anschutz article here, which also highlights the excellent rankings for some of our other schools on campus.
A special shout-out to Dr. Manisha Bhide, captain of the winning team of the first ever virtual National SGIM Jeopardy Quiz game. Dr. Bhide's team included the Rocky Mountain and New England regions. On the topic of SGIM's annual meeting, please join in a standing ovation for Dr. Rita Lee, chair of this year's meeting. The first virtual annual meeting for SGIM went beautifully. The conference was full of engaging speakers, workshops, and updates and used the virtual platform to its full advantage.
The Integrated Transgender Program has been receiving some amazing press recently. The Transgender ECHO, of which Drs. Rita Lee and Danielle Loeb part of, was featured earlier this month in an article from The Colorado Trust. The article highlights the importance and impact of providing education on gender-affirming care to providers in rural areas. You can read the full article here. Please welcome Kayla Bundo, MSN, RN-BC, the new Clinical Nurse Coordinator and CU Internal Medicine Cherry Creek (formerly known as DIMG). Kayla joins us from UCHealth where she was an endoscopy nurse and worked to support the COVID-19 response over the past year both as a triage nurse and a clinical lead for the drive through testing center. Glad to have you on the team, Kayla!
This month we celebrated Administrative Professional Day. GIM has a fabulous team of thoughtful, creative, and high-performing administrators to support and help drive forward the clinical, research, and educational work of the Division. Thank you to all of our outstanding administrators.

The Diabetes Prevention Program continues on strong. Twelve members are still participating and have transitioned from weekly meetings to two meetings per month. To date, the participants have logged 31,703 minutes (that's 528 hours!) of activity since the beginning of January. That's a lot of minutes toward a healthier lifestyle and preventing diabetes!

Dr. Suzanne Brandenburg was recently featured in an article in CU Anschutz Today for her leadership of the new University of Colorado School of Medicine at Colorado State University (CU SOM at CSU) branch campus. Dr. Brandenburg and her team are on the eve of an exciting milestone - the first four-year cohort of twelve medical students will be starting at the Fort Collins campus this summer. Last month we featured the full list of new interns joining the CU family this summer. This month we are happy to provide photos for the Primary Care Track interns at Denver Health. These nine interns bring diverse backgrounds from across the country with outstanding accomplishments in academics, research, community service, and patient care. They were selected based on their commitment to delivering primary care to vulnerable populations.
