Consider
the Birds...

Wendy Janzen, pastor at Burning Bush Forest Church in Ontario writes that...

Like many other folks, I have taken up bird watching as a new hobby during the pandemic. I put up a bird feeder that had been stored away in our basement, and now watch the birds come and go from my at-home workspace. Throughout this year I have identified 24 species that I have seen on or from our urban yard. It has not only been fun, but it has been enlightening to grow in awareness of the diversity of species who share this space with us.

Author Debbie Blue writes:
"I'm convinced that there is something about the sort of consciousness necessary for birding that is very much like the practice of faith. It comes and it goes. It requires waiting. You must use both your body and your mind. Attention is paramount."

This month, Wendy invites us to worship with the birds. The month of May is a time when many birds migrate north, bringing greater diversity through our area. Let's turn our attention to the birds and see what happens.

And here are two theological bird books that some of you may find interesting:

Consider the Birds: A Provocative Guide to Birds of the Bible, by Debbie Blue.
This book highlights 10 birds found in scripture, and with edginess and poignancy, weaves together scholarly work with profound truths about humanity, faith, and God's mysterious grace.

When God was a Bird: Christianity, Animism, and the Re-Enchantment of the Word, by Mark I. Wallace.
This beautifully and accessibly written book shows that "Christian animism" is not a contradiction in terms, but Christianity's natural habitat. Wallace touches on biblical texts, historical theology, philosophy, and personal stories, paving the way for a new Earth-loving spirituality.
