We Need A School Chancellor That Fights For Excellence in Education

This year, approximately 23,500 8th graders took the SHSAT exam and 4,262 received an offer to one of the nine specialized high schools in New York City.

An incredible achievement during a time where families everywhere have struggled with the pandemic.  But, instead of congratulating students, Chancellor Meisha Porter focused exclusively on criticism of the test.

Why does this matter?  Besides the cruelty, there are 124 schools in New York City that were deemed 'struggling' in 2019 by New York State.  Where the focus should be on ensuring that all children are given the opportunity to receive an excellent education -- the new Chancellor went right back to pitting groups against one another.

The New York City Residents Alliance (of which I am a co-founder) released a statement calling on Chancellor Porter to apologize.  You can read that here.

My hope is that in the coming year we can expect better for our children.
