The intention of this group is to build a community based in solidarity where students learn to support and care for themselves and one another.

Principal Update from Community Meeting

Dr. Petersen gave a fantastic presentation on how things look so far under hybrid learning. Dr. Peterson also welcomed Grout Elementary's principal, Denise Self, for a joint presentation on how our two neighborhood schools are working together and making separate decisions for their schools based on community needs. Academic Calendar for 2021-2022
We are happy to share with you the 2021-22 PPS District Calendar, which was approved by the Board of Education last evening. The school year calendar is now available on the PPS website (with translated versions available in all five of our supported languages), and work year calendars for PPS employees can be found on the Human Resources website.
As Superintendent Guerrero has said, it is our expectation that we will fully reopen for five days a week of in-person instruction in the fall. Unless health conditions and guidance from public health and Department of Education officials do not permit it, we expect and intend to welcome all students back to school this September.
We know this calendar is arriving later than usual, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.
Thank you.

Crossing Division on the Corner of Orange and Division
We have received at least one report from a parent attempting to cross Division at Orange Street that the traffic from the flagger and the lights don’t always match. They had a very close call to being hit when trying to cross the crosswalk.
We have requested a flagger be put on this corner during the construction. Thomas Scharff at Tri Met is going to work to get a second flagger at the corner of Orange and Division.
If you have students who walk to school please talk to them about this scenario. We highly encourage parents who live on the south side of Division to walk with their children.

A 2020 first place winner from the Bike to Books Design Contest. This bike lane art is located at N Concord Avenue and N Ainsworth Street.
(April 30, 2021) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and Multnomah County Library invite area youth to design their own original art for Portland’s bike lanes for the fifth annual Bike to Books design contest. The contest begins May 1 to coincide with the start of National Bike Month. Grand prize winners will have their artwork installed on Portland bike lanes and neighborhood greenways.
“The Bike to Books Design Contest is so important because it encourages children to read and bike more,” said Transportation Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty. “For five years now, this collaboration between PBOT and Multnomah County Library has provided incredible new bike lane art for our streets. I am so excited to see the designs that Portland youth will create this year!”
"We look forward to partnering with PBOT every year on Bike to Books," said Multnomah County Library Director Vailey Oehlke. "Especially with the challenges of this past year, we hope this program will encourage youth and families to explore the outdoors and find a safe bike route to their local library."

In this video, PBOT Maintenance Supervisor Kirstin Byer talks about how the Bike to Books drawings are installed on the road using thermoplastic and propane torches.

Starting Monday, May 3rd, construction crews plan to begin work at the northwest and northeast intersection corners of SE 11th Ave/Division and continue this work throughout most of next week. Late in the week, likely on Thursday (5/6) or Friday (5/7), crews would pause work at SE 11th Ave/Division and perform one day of select roadway paving on Division Street just east of SE 12th Ave. The week of May 10th, crews would plan to restart work at SE 11th Ave/Division with targeted work on the southeast and southwest intersection corners, followed by construction of the 11th Avenue Westbound Bus Station platform near the northwest corner. These plans and the timeline may shift based on field conditions and the weather.
Anticipated Traffic Impacts during the work at SE 11th Ave/Division Street: most of next week and during the several following weeks
· Pedestrians: Pedestrian detours near work zones. Crews plan to keep three of the four intersection corners open at a given time. Pedestrians may need to cross the street or use other available crossings to bypass a work zone.
· Autos: Lane closures and lane shifts on Division Street and on SE 11th Ave. Eastbound and westbound travel along Division is maintained. Southbound travel on SE 11th Ave is maintained. Autos traveling westbound on Division cannot turn left onto SE 11th Ave; autos can turn right at SE 10th Ave and follow detour signs and circulate around the block to access the southbound travel route on SE 11th Ave. The current plan is for this temporary left turn restriction at SE 11th Ave/Division to only be in place during 7am-6pm construction hours, but it is possible this could shift based on field conditions. There may be additional turn restrictions in the area.
· To ensure everyone’s safety, please allow extra time to travel through the area and please follow directions from flaggers and signs.
Anticipated Traffic Impacts during select roadway paving on SE Division Street east of SE 12th Ave: Likely Thursday (5/6) or Friday (5/7)
· Pedestrians: Minimal pedestrian detour impacts near SE 12th Ave/Division, since paving work is focused on the roadway
· Autos: Traffic flagging at the intersection of SE 12th Ave and Division Street during morning and afternoon hours. During traffic flagging, up to three of the four existing lanes may be closed near the intersection, with flaggers allowing one direction of travel at a time. Autos should plan for delays. Eastbound and westbound travel along Division Street will be allowed and guided by flaggers. Flaggers will also guide northbound traffic along SE 12th Ave, which will be allowed. There will be a number of no-parking/no-loading signs up, and the curbside space on the south side of Division Street between SE 11th Ave and SE 12th Ave will not be accessible by vehicle. There may be additional turn restrictions in the area.
· Paving Vibrations: Please plan for rumbling, vibrations, and odors from the equipment and materials.
· To ensure everyone’s safety, please allow extra time to travel through the area and please follow directions from flaggers and signs.

COVID-19 Updates From Nurse LeAnn
All Oregonians age 16 and older are eligible now to receive COVID-19 vaccine as of April 19. The Oregon Health Authority has a web page OHA vaccine finder website. It lists drive through clinics, vaccine events and pharmacies that have the vaccine.
You may have questions about the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and the CDC has a good website for Understanding mRNA vaccines. A few facts about COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines from this CDC website:
They cannot give someone COVID-19. mRNA vaccines do not use the live virus that causes COVID-19. They do not affect or interact with our DNA in any way. mRNA never enters the nucleus of the cell, which is where our DNA (genetic material) is kept. The cell breaks down and gets rid of the mRNA soon after it is finished using the instructions.
For Hybrid learning please remember the Daily illness self-screening checklist. Students and staff that become ill at school will be evaluated.
PPS has hybrid learning questions in various languages

Nutrition Services Food and Supply Substitutions
The impact on the national supply chain due to COVID, restaurants and other businesses reopening, and the back up at the Port of Los Angeles have all impacted our ability to receive food and supplies as we have menued and ordered. For these reasons, families may see changes in packaging - how foods are packaged and the style of bag that we serve the meals in or how foods are packed may be different between schools based on what they have on hand to use. Families may also experience substitutions on the menu. With these impacts, we are still committed to offering all students breakfast and lunch for free. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time. If you have questions, please feel free to contact our department - nutritionservices@pps.net.
