WACOSS Emerging Issues Forum
The online forum is a future-focused scan to analyse the most current and relevant trends affecting the sector, providing an opportunity for members of WACOSS to gather information on the evolving landscape of the community services sector in WA for their future planning needs.

Parks & Leisure Australia (WA) Deconstructed Conference
The deconstructed conference will include one-day stream mini conferences which will run throughout the months of May, June, July and August.

National Youth Homelessness Virtual Conference
The conference will aim to mobilise a collective commitment to developing a joint NGO-Government national strategy to end child and youth homelessness.

This professional development event will showcase an educational and informative program, designed specifically for Local Government officers working in community development. The conference theme is 'Creating community impact - awareness, action, influence.'

Bringing Children and Young People into View – FDV Conference 2021
The purpose of the conference is to strengthen the understanding of children and young people’s experiences and needs, and to consider the responses that can be put in place to support their safety, health and wellbeing and improve their opportunities.

| National Reconciliation Week 2021 |
|
| National Reconciliation Week 2021 takes place from 27 May to 3 June and this year's theme is "More than a word. Reconciliation takes action" which urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. |
|
2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process.
In the past year, with Black Lives Matter protests and huge numbers at Invasion Day rallies across the country, more people are understanding the truth and speaking up on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2021 theme asks people to take this awareness and knowledge, and use it as a springboard to more substantive, brave action.
WALGA staff will participate in a Cultural Awareness Workshop on Monday, 31 May. A range of other events will take place across the country. To participate in an event, click here. |

| The Tjina: Western Australian Aboriginal Tourism Action Plan and $20 million Aboriginal Tourism Fund |
|
| The Tjina: Western Australian Aboriginal Tourism Action Plan was developed by Tourism Western Australia and other government agencies with the Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council and the Aboriginal tourism industry. |
|
The four-year plan, backed by the $20 million Aboriginal Tourism Fund, will support a range of initiatives including:
- the development of new Aboriginal tourism experiences;
- more Aboriginal people working in the tourism industry;
- the development of administration and booking systems to support Aboriginal tourism businesses;
- up to three new Camping with Custodian campgrounds; and
- an increase in tourism experiences on the Dampier Peninsula, after the Cape Leveque Road was sealed last year.

| 'Roll up for WA' Campaign: COVID-19 Vaccination Program |
|
| The WA Government has launched the 'Roll up for WA' COVID-19 vaccination campaign. |
|
| There has been conflicting information from around the world, and people might be feeling anxious or confused about COVID-19 vaccinations. A range of materials has been developed to communicate information about WA's COVID-19 vaccination program. This includes posters, newsletter resources, and social media tiles available here. |

| Communities Partnership Framework Launched by Department of Communities |
|
| The Department of Communities has launched their Communities Partnership Framework for establishing and sustaining partnerships with external stakeholders. |
|
The Communities’ Partnership Framework (the Framework) was co-developed through a series of consultations and workshops with Communities staff and representatives from community services sector peak bodies and organisations.
It is intended that the Framework will evolve and be updated over time to reflect changes to agency policies and strategies, and emerging partnership practice. Feedback is encouraged to the Department of Communities Sector Partnerships Team. |

| Have Your Say: Help Shape the Future of Reducing Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence in Australia |
|
| The Australian Government has opened public consultation on the next National Plan to reduce family, domestic and sexual violence in Australia. |
|
Feedback provided during the consultation will inform key priorities and focus areas for the next National Plan at a national and state and territory level. It will also build on the feedback received through the Parliamentary Inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence.
A consultation guide has been developed here. Local Governments are invited to provide feedback by the consultation deadline of Saturday, 31 July.
A two-day National Women’s Safety Summit to be held on 29 and 30 July is being held to inform the National Plan including keynote addresses, panel discussions and workshops focused on issues affecting women’s safety as well as a series of roundtables. |

| Heritage Amendment Regulations 2021 - Consultation Open |
|
| The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage have commenced consultation on the Heritage Amendment Regulations 2021. |
|
The Heritage Act 2018 (Act) and the Heritage Regulations 2019 (Regulations) came into effect in July 2019. The Regulations adopted at this time were considered to be the minimum necessary for the functioning of the Act. Changes now proposed through the Heritage Amendment Regulations 2021 activate further provisions in the Act, and revise current regulations as recommended through the operation of the Act since its adoption.

| Guidelines for State Government Heritage Final Review |
|
| The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage on behalf of the Heritage Council of Western Australia is seeking further comment on draft Guidelines for State Government Heritage assets. |
|
The Heritage Act 2018 highlighted the need for guidelines to assist State Government agencies to efficiently manage and conserve heritage assets and maintain up to date inventories.
The draft guidelines can be viewed here. This version of the guidelines was prepared using feedback received on earlier drafts.

| White Paper on Local Government Graffiti Management |
|
| A White Paper on Local Government Graffiti Management has been developed by the City of Joondalup and is available for comment. |
|
The White Paper considers graffiti management strategies related to Local Government and attempts to address different aspects of the local graffiti culture and the impact it has on the community.
The White Paper is available here. Local Governments are encouraged to provide comments by Friday, 11 June. |

| National Volunteer Week 17 - 23 May 2021 |
|
| National Volunteer Week 17 - 23 May 2021 (NVW) is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers. |
|
The theme for NVW 2021 is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine.
Thousands of activities will be held across the country to say thank you to the 6 million Australians who volunteer their time. The week-long celebration will include social media campaigns, breakfasts, morning/afternoon teas, and luncheons, as well as open days, award ceremonies, picnics, forums and training sessions. |

| Western Australian Cultural Infrastructure Map |
|
| The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries has released the Western Australian Cultural Infrastructure Map. |
|
The WA Cultural Infrastructure Map can be used to search for a cultural facility or for future planning to grow WA’s cultural engagement and creative economy.
Users can suggest a new or existing facility that is missing from the map, as well as provide information to update a facility’s details or location.

| A Roadmap for Respect: Preventing and Addressing Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces |
|
| Workplace sexual harassment is prevalent and pervasive: it occurs in every industry, in every location and at every level, in Australian workplaces. |
|
In 2018, the Government funded the Australian Human Rights Commission (the AHRC) to undertake a landmark National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces. The inquiry, was the first of its kind in the world. The product of this inquiry was the Respect@Work Report which provides a comprehensive set of recommendations for addressing sexual harassment in the workplace.
A Roadmap for Respect is the Commonwealth Government's response to the Respect@Work Report. The Commonwealth Government is committed to building a culture of respectful relationships in Australian workplaces by agreeing to (in full, in part or in principle) or noting all 55 recommendations in the Respect@Work Report. Funding of projects in the Roadmap for which the Commonwealth bears responsibility will be detailed in the forthcoming federal budget. |

| Closure of the Goodbye Graffiti Hotline |
|
| The WA Police Force will be phasing out and then closing the Goodbye Graffiti Hotline over the coming months, and encouraging reporting only online. |
|
The WA Police Force will be phasing out and then closing the Goodbye Graffiti Hotline over the coming months, and encouraging reporting only online.
The closure comes due to a significant reduction in phone calls to this hotline, as well as the many options to report graffiti.
Local Governments are encouraged to remove and dispose of any publications promoting the Goodbye Graffiti Hotline number 1800 44 22 55. The WA Police Force will replace any Local Government resources and can be ordered here. |

| Residential Rent Relief Grant Scheme |
|
| The WA Government’s Residential Rent Relief Grant Scheme, introduced in 2020, has expanded to offer future rent support for tenants who are struggling financially to meet rent payments after the end of the emergency period. |
|
Currently the Residential Rent Relief Grants Scheme grants are capped at $2,000 per tenancy.
Rent arrears assistance grants are also still available to help tenants pay their outstanding rent debt that arose before 1 December 2020. Grants for 75 per cent of rent arrears, up to a maximum of $4,000, will be paid directly to eligible landlords. This includes any rent that was waived or reduced during the moratorium emergency period. |

| Celebrating Bindoon Library |
|
| In December 2020, Bindoon Library in the Shire of Chittering won the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Making a Difference Award, which recognises a regional Local Government for their outstanding efforts in promoting positive community outcomes. |
|
Annie Hudson started at Bindoon Library in late 2016 and one of her first objectives was to activate the library space in line with the Shire's Strategic Community Plan. Annie has been successful in achieveing this, with the Library now providing lots of activities and events for the community, unstopped by COVID-19, with a focus on supporting social isolation, access to services for all, and IT assistance. The library's increased output of activities and events led to an over 200% increase in visits to the library.
 
The library is currently working on a Reading Nook at the front of the library to give patrons a place to sit and read, utliise WIFI when the library is closed, or to pick up a book from out Free Book Trolley.

| WA Consumer Protection and Anglicare – Assistance for Tenants |
|
| Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) staff have a pathway to refer tenants in distress to Anglicare WA and the wider community sector through a simple referral form and triage service. |
|
- Housing needs – the Anglicare team will support the tenant with accessing local housing supports to overcome their housing issues. They will work with them to overcome immediate barriers that may be preventing the tenant from maintaining their current tenancy or refer onto the appropriate housing service in their area.
- Financial needs – the Anglicare team will have a conversation about their immediate financial needs and provide support with budgeting advice, access to financial counselling and emergency relief.
- Anglicare WA has over 88 programs across the state, across counselling, financial counselling, housing, disability and family relationships. The Support workers can help the tenant navigate the programs and provide referrals to internal programs.
The process is as follows:
- DMIRS will gain verbal consent from the tenant to share their personal information contained in the referral form with Anglicare for the purpose of arranging community support to address their presenting needs.
- DMIRS will complete the referral form.
- A support worker from Anglicare WA will contact the tenant to explore referrals and information to support them with addressing their presenting needs.

| Foodbank WA Survey: Expansion of the Fuel Your Future Program |
|
| Foodbank WA is seeking information from organisations and their youth networks to inform the expansion of the Fuel Your Future program in metropolitan Western Australia. |
|
The Fuel Your Future program helps to build knowledge, skills confidence to empower young people to make and eat healthier food choices. Fuel Your Future is currently only delivered in the Pilbara region, but is aiming to reach youth across the rest of WA too.
Feedback is encouraged through the survey by Friday, 5 June. |

| Injury Matters - Updated Injury Fact Sheets |
|
| Through the Know Injury program, Injury Matters have recently updated a suite of WA injury fact sheets. |
|
Highlighting the incidence of injury in WA’s seven regional health areas and across seven different health topics, the fact sheets provide the latest WA hospitalisation and fatality data.
