Voices of Lighthouses Newsletter

Friend

May your joys be as deep as the ocean, your troubles as light as its foam, may you find sweet peace of mind wherever you roam. I love this uplifting Irish Blessing. It renews my hope and brings to mind my travels to Ireland and Northwest Florida. Wishing you a a ray of sunshine as you read my newsletter and embark on life’s journey.

No one achieves success without acknowledging the help of others. Alfred Whitehead

I’m so grateful that my paintings were featured recently in St. Augustine Lighthouse’s Sunday Funday. Be sure to follow them on Instagram. You’ll find engaging activities, fun events, interesting facts and more. Thanks again to their incredible Social Media expert, Bobby!

St Augustine Lighthouse
 The Great Lighthouses of Ireland
Gratitude can be like hindsight. I am so fortunate that I visited Ireland in 2016. I truly appreciate the patience and kindness of fellow travelers. John Eagle conducted the Northern Ireland Lighthouse tour despite the group not meeting his profit threshold. He also sought out additional lighthouses for me to draw. A couple years later John passed away. So thankful our paths crossed. John was such a kind hearted, talented artist and photographer. He cared more about people than profit.

Blackhead Lighthouse

Hailed as one of the great lighthouses in Ireland, Blackhead Lighthouse is perched high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. While the lighthouse has saved countless lives, it stood watch as the Titanic tragically passed by on its final journey.

“Hope in the Night” captures the lighthouse shining in the dark. This is my only painting of an active lighthouse at night.

Fanad Lighthouse

Voted one of the world's most beautiful lighthouses, Fanad Lighthouse is one of 12 the Great Lighthouses of Ireland. The Commissioners of Irish Lights offers overnight stays at these select lighthouses.

Fanad Lighthouse was built after the shipwreck of the Royal Navy Frigate, Saldanha where 250 people died. The captain’s parrot was the only survivor.

“I absolutely love it!” Frankie
I appreciate this soon to be newlywed and new collector’s enthusiasm for my art. (God bless her.) She fell in love with my art after seeing it featured on St. Augustine’s Lighthouse Sunday Funday on Instagram. Thanks again and congratulations.
The Coast is Clear

While the phrase the Coast is Clear may take on new meaning this year with the end of lockdowns and the promise of more freedoms, for me it’s a fond reminder of a Mother’s Day trip a few years ago along Florida’s Forgotten Coast.

Florida’s Northwest Coast rarely draws crowds or headlines like Miami on Florida’s East Coast. Perhaps that is why it is called The Forgotten Coast. Its unspoiled, pristine white sand and turquoise waters lure young and old.

There are plenty of lighthouses to see:  St. Marks Lighthouse, Crooked River Lighthouse, Cape San Blas Lighthouse, St. Joseph Point Lighthouse and Cape St. George Lighthouse.

More

Crooked River Lighthouse

Crooked River Lighthouse overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and is situated next to Camp Jordan Museum. Amphibious soldiers of World War II were trained at the camp. The painting, L’ Art Degenere d’phare (Lighthouse Degenerate Art) honors the Cubists artists whose works were banned by the Nazis of World War II and displayed in the Degenerate Art Exhibit. The works of art were taken out of German Museums.

Cape San Blas Lighthouse

After being rebuilt several times due to hurricanes and foul weather, the current Cape San Blas Lighthouse stands in an idyllic setting overlooking St. Joseph Bay in Port St. Joe.

This steel framed lighthouse has been on the move since day one. It was initially transported by ship in 1883. A convoy moved the lighthouse in 2018 to Port St. Joe. The painting “Light Travels” recalls its journeys.

Cape San Blas Lighthouse

Cape St. George Lighthouse

Cape St. George Lighthouse was rebuilt in 2008 with the support of the local community, state and federal governments. It was constructed from the remains of the 1852 lighthouse.

The yellow in the painting symbolizes happiness and caution. It celebrates the rebuilding of the lighthouse while noting peril could only be a storm away.

A shout out to my son who was instrumental in getting me three solo exhibits in New York and arranged my New York Lighthouse Trip, my youngest daughter who traveled with me to visit London lighthouses, my oldest daughter and grandson who are passionate about my art. A special thanks to my nephew who took my profile photo at St. Augustine Lighthouse.

365 days of Mother’s Day indeed.
