Hey there, sports fans!

This week in sports, the Hornets' baseball team takes a huge loss in its series against Grand Canyon University. A similar fate befell the softball team, dropping 2-of-3 in its series against Idaho State. On a brighter note, Sac State's men's golf team took first place in the Big Sky Championship tournament, as well as two individual titles. Women's rowing won its first race of the season after grappling with complications related to a year-long hiatus. Watch senior outfielder Matt Smith at bat against Northern Colorado as he makes the swings that finalized his position as the all-time hit and RBI leader at Sac State. Our player of the week is the first woman at Sac State to break a record for fastest 5k ran since 2015 and now holds seventh place for fastest time. All these stories and more below!

The Hornets had seemingly fair odds going into their home series against evenly ranked Grand Canyon University last weekend. However, their 3-2 win on Sunday was far from enough to claim an overall victory against the Lopes. Grand Canyon led the series 35-9 over Sac State, leaving the Hornets firmly in their place as a distant third in WAC standings.

The team's regrettable and substantial loss comes a week after the Hornets' tie with Northern Colorado and their series split with University of Kansas

It was a bittersweet send-off for the Hornets softball team, as their senior celebration at Shea Stadium coincided with a series loss against Idaho State on Saturday.

“We have a resilient team, and I have no doubt they will come back home and get back to work,” said head coach Lori Perez. “Our goal is to be playing our best during Big Sky Conference Tournament time."

After a year-long hiatus due to COVID-19, Sac State's women's rowing team did more than just dip their toes in the water as they managed to win their first race back. The varsity eight team beat St. Mary's College by a 20 second lead, and claimed the title of "Boat of the Week" from the American Athletic Conference.

The team's co-captain, senior Helena Young weighed in on how training in a socially-distant and regulated environment affected the team's dynamic.

“Training in pods was very different from what we have done in the past,” Young said. “It was hard in the sense that we didn’t get to see all our teammates and made the process of getting to know the new people harder and longer.”

'Let the champagne bottle pop,' all-time hitting record broken

"It means the world," said senior outfielder Matt Smith on becoming the all-time school RBI and hit leader.

Smith broke the record during the Hornets' winning game against Northern Colorado on April 25.

"I think as long as you have a plan, know who you are and you stick with it, you'll have good success," said Smith.
