In the News: Role of POC in Environmental Justice Movements
Stevie Ruiz (left) at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, Calif., with CSUN students Tomas Figueroa, Jr., Quetzalli Enrique, and Enrique Ramirez, Jr. Photo courtesy of Stevie Ruiz, from CSUN Today.
CSUN Chicana/o Studies Professor Stevie Ruiz recently wrote a book, "Stewards of the Land: Race, Space, and Environmental Justice," that discusses the role of Latino and Asian-American communities in the environmental justice movement more than 100 years ago.

The book, under contract with the University of North Carolina Press, was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship at the Huntington Library and the Chicana/o Studies Research Center's Visiting Scholar Award.

In the CSUN Today Article, Ruiz stated: "The first step is acknowledging the roles people of color have played historically in preserving our public lands and developing our national parks,” he said. “We also have to acknowledge the role racism has played under the guise of environmentalism.”

CSU's Race Against the Climate Crisis
collage of CSU climate change initiatives

Experts across the world, including at the CSU, engage in research to help people adapt to the climate crisis —from protecting the ocean to responding to wildfires. But to truly save the earth, efforts also need to mitigate climate change by addressing the cause of the problem: greenhouse gas emissions.

To aid in the efforts to mitigate the climate crisis, CSU faculty and students are finding ways to further curtail emissions and extract carbon from the atmosphere. Click here to learn more about these initiatives.

Support Pollinators with "No Mow May"

"No Mo May" flyer from Bee City USA
Join communities across the country for No Mow May, an initiative to help support early season pollinators by allowing your yard to grow for the month of May.

Learn more about the history of No Mow May, how to participate, and additional steps you can take to help out the bees, butterflies, and other insects that support our planet by visiting Bee City USA's No Mow May webpage or reading their No Mow May blog post

Does No Mow May Work? Research Says Yes

In 2020, over 435 registered property owners in Wisconsin participated in the campaign, including Lawrence University. Research was then conducted on the impact of No Mow May on pollinators.

Not only were the abundance and richness of bees higher in the yards of properties participating in No Mow May, but they were much higher. Participating yards had three-times higher bee species richness and five-times higher bee abundance than nearby parks that had been mowed.

This study was published in 2020 and is available for free download online
