New arrivals direct from Piedmont supplemented with some treasures from local cellars
This interesting and deep selection contains many of the finest Barolo (and Barbaresco) vintages of the latter half of the 20th century. Most of the wines are acquired through a growing number of contacts we have made in Piedmont, though those treasures are supplemented by additions from the cellars of local collectors. Two such treasures are the  Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Riserva 1961 and Cantina Mascarello Barolo 1971. 

This shipment has replenished our stocks of old and reliable favorites like the big houses of Giacomo Borgogno, who’s original-release pink capped bottles offer benchmark examples from every great year. We have stock of the outstanding vintages in 1952, 1958, 1964, 1967 and 1971. The big houses had their run of the vineyards throughout this period, essentially holding small growers to ransom. Nowadays those big names like Fontanafredda or the Marchesi di Barolo inspire little romance, but for those willing to swim against the tide of recent fashion, they offer superb value particularly in these great years when it was the vintage that spoke louder than the name on the label.

Next Shipment, due in just a few weeks contains gems from Vallana, Conterno and the Produttori
We are also offering wines from our next batch from Piedmont, including the superb and highly prized wines of Antonio Vallana, with over two dozen different labels. These wines are legends and are now a bit rare. There is also a 6 pack of Giacomo Conterno 1967, and a long, long list of wines from the Produttori dating back to 1970. It will suffice to say that we cannot keep the old Produttori in stock, they sell as fast as we can find them.

Vintages
The youngest wine in the offer is the 3L of Produttori del Barbaresco 1990 - talk about a party wine that is in its prime drinking window. Other than a few bottles from the 80’s,  the majority of this offer comes from the 70’s, 60’s and 50’s. Like Port, or indeed Bordeaux or Burgundy in this period, the great years came with surprising regularity; about 3 per decade and often, curiously at three-year intervals. The best to look out for are ’78, ’74, ’71, ’70, ’67, ’64, ’61, ’58 and ’52. This is not to say you will not enjoy a great bottle of 1973 Renato Ratti Marcenasco but your odds are best if you stick to the best vintages.

A word about handling these wines
Nebbiolo needs air more than any other wine. Whether old or brand-new, you really cannot give these wines too long in the decanter. Long and extensive experience speaks loudly and tells us forcefully: fortune favors the brave! You might worry about the risk of opening a 50-year-old bottle in the morning or even the night before your dinner, but the greatest mistake you can make with these wines is to ‘pop and pour.’ This stuff has been quietly sitting around for 40 or 50 years working through all that tannin and material with the merest micro dose of oxygen, it is no surprise that these wines need hours to re-order and realign all that structure and nuance in the rich presence of atmospheric oxygen. Make sure you stand them up days in advance of careful decanting and, if you can make them last, these wines will reward you for three or four days.
