The latest in the art world, exclusively for Curate LA Members.

Being that May is Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought we should all take a moment to consider the darker effects of working in the art industry. We’ve all heard about it or even experienced it ourselves. We've seen accounts like @cancelartgalleries speaking up about abusive gallery owners and @jerrygagosian making cheeky memes about innocent unpaid gallery interns. I want to have a conversation about the toxic traits of this art world that we all know and hold dearly, whether it’s working late hours, expectations to always respond to emails or be available no matter what time of day it is, abuse of power by higher-ups and ahem.. men, mentally and emotionally abusive work environments, not being paid enough, being gaslit, manipulated by empty promises of success, or the withholding of access for only a select few.  Let's face it, even just the concept of “VIP” is quite exclusionary for so many folx.

It's safe to say that in the past year we've all had a bit of extra time to reflect on certain aspects of life that we might have been living with and accepted which weren't actually the healthiest. We've maybe thought to ourselves "for what?", I know that I have. And when you think about it, there really is no reason why these practices should be prevalent in an industry that prides itself in open-mindedness, future thinking, creativity, and inclusivity. These practices are just something we've all inherited, an archaic system at best. So ask yourself, who does this way of life actually serve?
