In preparing for Just 24, I'm reminded of Psalm 82:2-3: “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.”
This is a powerful questions and command. While we may not individually show partiality, our legal system can show partiality and be unjust when the poor do not have the same chance for justice as those who can afford to hire an attorney. Studies consistently show that low-income residents without attorneys fare significantly worse than those who are represented across a range of civil legal issues. In DC, experienced attorneys can have rates at over $300/hour, and there are only 9.3 civil legal aid attorneys for every 10,000 people in poverty.
This leaves our most vulnerable neighbors at a great disadvantage. As God’s people, we have a mission to join in his work to bring healing and justice to everyone, especially the poor and oppressed.
We know firsthand how great the need is. Our clinics have a waiting list and we get more calls every day. The need in our city is not slowing down so neither can we. Will you donate today and help us defend and uphold the causes of our neighbors?
Everyone deserves access to justice. This is why CLADC was created and this is why we do what we do: to show the transforming love of Christ by ensuring our most vulnerable neighbors have the access to justice they deserve.
